January 24, 1992 page two Meredith Herald Staff Editorial Let's Remember the Positive Things, Too by Jessica Cook. Copy Editor Rcccntly, many positive changes have taken place in the Meredith community. The Stu dent l-ife Committee abolished the outdated, irrational freshman curfew. Computers have heen installed in dorms so that students have word processing centers virtually outside their doors. To ensure .student security, emergency phones have been installed around the fields and parking lots. Le Greenhouse is experi menting with evening hours. Without a doubt, ihe deli in the cafeteria has been a huge suc cess; due to student enthusiasm for the deli bar, it remained open for dinner as well as for lunch. Sophomorescan now bring iheir cars to campus. Hvery semester new and interesting classes are added to the curriculum. Obviously, the students do have a voice at Meredith College. Policy can be changed; if students work together to voice what they disagree with or want at this college, many goals can be accomplished, even the abolition of the obsolete, unfairly restricting policy of male vi.sitationon the Meredith campus. Noth ing isout of reach with perseverance and hard work. Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, We, the Supply Store student workers, would like to take this opportunity to respond to Lisa Olliver’s letter to the editor in the January 17th edition of the Meredith Herald. First of all, we would like to comment on the selection of used books. Coming Monday or Tuesday almost guarantees that one will be able to purchase used books for most clas.ses. By waiting until the end of the week to purchase books, the chance of getting used books is slim to none. Still there are books that come out as new editions, and it is practically impossible for the Meredith bookstore or any other bookstore to get used copies. With the new return policy at the bookstore, if you have bought a book that you do not need, it is possible to return the book during the first two weeks of classes with only the receipt. The bookstore does not require that a student purchase books here at Meredith. If a student feels the need to do so, she may copy down her books from a book list provided by the book store and try finding those books elsewhere. We, as student workers, understand Ms. Olliver’s financial position as we are working to put ourselves through school also. Contrary to popular belief, the bookstore does not any profit on the sale of books, new or used. The only markup done on the price of the books is to cover the cost of freight in and out. As for the argument of better book-buying opportunities for NCSU students, the professor has the option on the book order form to choose whether or not to have used books in stock. It is not the Supply Store’s fault if he or she does not want used books, i.e. workbooks, study guides, foreign language books, etc. Also due to our small enrollment, outside book distributors do no wish to cater to Meredith’s book requests. Of course, it is the student’s option to not buy the books if she does not want to. We recognize the fact that students are not given the privilege of looking through books before purchasing them. This is due to lack of space allowed for books in the bookstore. There are approximately 20,000 books at the begin ning of each semester. It is the student workers’ responsibility to make sure each student gets the correct books for her classes. However, we realize we make mistakes, but under the circum stances we do the best we can. It is also our responsibility to understand the system through which these books are distributed. As anyone who has visited the bookstore during book nish will understand, it would be total confusion to Continued on page three Managing Editor Publications Editor Copy Editor Business Manager Advisor Features Editor Photography Editor Kelly Parker Amy LaVoy Jessica Cook Jane Kennedy Nan Miller Amity Brown Julie Smith staff Gilda Boyd Sonali Kolhatkar Betsy Mao Tracey Rawls Trista Schagat Hannah Simonds Julie Smith Ellen Williamson Special Contributers Laura Davenport Pat Yauch Jennifer Hartig-Calender Events Julia Dixon Meredith Herald Meredith College 3800 Hillsborough Street Box X133 Raleigh.
