Meredith Herald 1891 - Honoring Our Heritage...Expanding Our Vision -1991 Volume vni. Issue February 14J992 Raleigh, North Carolina Procedure for Selecting Students for Off-Campus Housing to Change by Karen Howell On February 18, a drawing will be held to determine which students will be granted the option to move off- campus. Twelve rising juniors and 24 rising seniors will be given this option. The drawing is a different approach to determining which stu> dents move off-campus; in the past, students lined up outside the Office of the Dean of Students as early as 6 a.m. to stake their claim to an off- campus slot. Controversy arose as to the fairness of the procedure; stu dents left the residence halls prior to 6 a.m., and people broke in line. Students did not think the procedure was fair. Therefore, this year a draw ing will be held. Janice McClendon, Director of Housing, wanted students involved in determining the proce dure. At the November Full Board meeting ofthe ResidenceHall Board, the off-campus procedure was discussed, andttieir suggestions, com bined with a few otherrecommenda- tions from SGA, resulted in the pro cess which will be used. For your information, here is the procedure which will be uti lized. All rising juniors and seniors with a 2.0 GPA and parental permis sion can enter the drawing. Students can enter the drawing as an indi vidual or as a group of 2,3, or 4. But each group will have only one form in the drawing. Students who do not fiilfiH the requirement will be noti fied by the Office of the Dean of Students. Tlieir name wiU be dropped off the form, but the other names on the form will still be entered in the drawing. There will be a separate drawing forjuniors and seniors. Once the drawing has begun, if an uneven number is reached, the drawing will continue until the desired number is reached. For instance, if 11 names are drawn, the drawing will continue until aonepersonformisdrawn. Hie names that were drawn in the search for the one person will begin the waiting list. Once the quota has been reached, the drawing will continue until all the names have been drawn. After the waiting list is compiled, another drawing will take place to order the waiting list. Forinstance,if a four person form is drawn to begin the waiting list, these four names will be redrawn so that their place ment on the waiting list is fair, rather than having the person at the top of the form be the first person on the waiting list. Students on the waiting list will be given the option to move off-campus only if aquota spot opens up. In the past, more students were allowed to move off-campus during the summer. However, this year students should understand that only 36 students from the drawing will be able to move off-campus. Tlie Board of Trustees requires that the residence halls be full, and with the decreasing number of freshmen entering college, less people can move off-campus. Second Century Challenge Campaign Progress Encouraging by Allen Burris, Dean of Academic Affairs Many times a college community learns about encouraging news from the outside media. Because our Second Century Challenge Campaign is such a broad project which affects all of us, it is helpful to have everyone informed. Also, it is encouraging to hear good news. First, we have now acquired $5,650,061.73 in gifts and pledges toward our goal of $10.6 million. This is 53 percent, and, if we remain on schedule, we would reach 75 percent by July 1. Our Board of Trustees determined that we should have $2.2 million of the $2,475 million directed to the Ledford Building by Feb. 284n order to approve the spring construction start. To date we have $2,009,731.24, and we gave oae month to raise the remaining $190,268.76 If you know of any large (or small) donors please let me know. It will be close, but all of us feel very positive about the possibilities. continued on page four
