Campus Leaders Gather for
Winter Leadership
Conference
by Amity Brown
Campus leaders gathered for the 1992 Winter
Leadership Conference to take a “Step in the
Right Direction” Saturday, February 1,1992, at
the Radisson in downtown Raleigh. The Office
of Student Activities and Leadership Develop
ment sponsored the conference.
From the opening sessfon 6n creativity lead
by Bo Prosser to the closing keynote speech
given by Sue Hubbard Ramsay, a Raleigh busi
nesswoman and Meredith^iimnae, the day was
filled with programs designed to help students
lead their various organizations.
After the creativity session, the students were
divided into four groups and were sent to cre
ativity workshops headed by SGA leaders. The
workshops were about programming,
fundraising, planning meetings, and advertis
ing meetings.
Next, conference participants were given the
choice of attending one of two mini-sessions.
One, “How Not to Step on Anyone’s Toes,” was
on assertiveness and was lead by Beverly Jones
Williams. The other, "Stepping into a Healtheir
You,” was conducted by Rose Wise and was
concerning wellness.
After the lunch break, participants were al
lowed to chose between two more mini-ses
sions. Bettie Shipp Rabb spoke on profession
alism at Meredith, while Marirose Steigerwald
lead a session on professionalism in the work
place.
Finally, Sue Hubbard Ramsay gave the key
note address. Ramsay’s speech, entitled “A
Step in the Right Direction,” detailed her expe
riences in college and the workplace.
Several organizations participated in the con
ference, including ABA, RHB, class officers,
the Acorn staff, and Junior Woman’s Club.

Holds Drawing to

well as a doctor’s note or other documentation
deemed necessary.
Tliere is no doubt that all the students who
applied to live off-campus feel that they should
be allowed; however, current enrollement does
not allow for an unlimited number of students to
move off-campus. The procedure for determin
ing who receives permission to live off-campus
is always a chaotic event for the Director of
Residence Life. After all the complaints that
surrounded last year's selection, a change was
deemed necessary. As aresult, the decision was
made to switch from a first come, first serve
procedure to a drawing, which is an attempt to
give everyone an equal chance. Perhaps all
students do not like the drawing, but it is fair.
One final note: students who iiave been given
the off-campus option will receive a letter from
the Office of the Dean of Students to which they
must reply by Monday, March 9, indicating
whether or not they pi an to exercise their option
to move off-campus.
