March 20,1992 page five Meredith to offer television production class for fall semester by Sonaii IColhatkar Meredith College is honored to have Dr. Terry Kauffman as a distinguished faculty member. Dr. Kauffman is an N.C. State University communication lecturer. She has incorporated all of her interests into a job that fulfills her love of television broadcasting and production. She has also gained the Triangle's recognition with her wedcly cable show, “Women Today”, and her heightening of the public’s awareness of environmental issues. Dr. KauHman has produced, directed and written thirteen documentaries for the San Francisco Environment Center. These broadcasts helped her win a National Broadcasting award. She has also written “Thanksgiving”, a drama for PBS, and she had a tele vised art exhibit containing portraits and songs which she composed. Dr. Kauffoian’s proposed new course at Meredith is entitled Televi sion Production Design. It is a survey of writing, directing and editing techniques for television, video and film. TlieOTy mid practice of scriptwriting for news, features, documentaries and drama will also be covered. Students leam broadcast journalism and writing skills, and even write short radio and television news pieces, a short feature or docu mentary program for television, and a short dramatic teleplay or screenplay. Students study the principles of shooting and editing for these fonnats, including programs like “60 Minutes”, and the difference between single camera field shooting and multi-cam studio production. This is primarily a non-production course; however, an optional lab with production capability is offered. There is no prerequisite and everyone is encouraged to register for it POTmer students sing high praises for its ch^enging content and the fun aspect of finding out what “really” goes on in a production. Freshman/Sophomore math competition winners named The Math and Computer Science Department recently announced the winners of the Freshman/Sophomore Competition that was held in January. Tiffany Short, a sophomore Math and Biology Major, was announced as this year’s winner. Second Prize was awarded to April Honeycutt who is a Freshman Honor Student. April has said that she is considering a major in Music Composition and English. April plans to have a career as a musical composer but has considered teaching or editorial work before becoming an established composer. The winners of the first and second prizes both received academic scholar ships as well as book awards. As in the past there were also honorable mention awards given. Coming Soon... Lori Elliot, who is a Freshman Honor Student, and Sandra Parrish, who is a Sophomore Teaching Fellow were also named as Honorable Mention Award winners. All three Honorable Mention Award winners plan to pursue careers in teaching. Heather is planning to teach biology while Lori and Sandra plan to teach math. All of (he Honor able Mention winners received book awards.
