March 27,1992 page SIX Meredith Performs production of A Midsummer’s Night Dream to offer new treatment of script by Nan Stephenson, Director of The atre From April 2-12, Meredith Per forms will present William Shakespeare’s most imaginative comedy and perhaps his most pro found play. The production will offer a new treatment of the script that highlights the hilarity, hijinks, and moonstruck imagery of this most magical entertainment. This play, directed by Dr. John Creagh, is for the philosophical child and the lovestruck philosopher in all of us. Meredith Performs has long planned to offer this production as a conclusion of our Centennial Cel ebration. The play was the first staged at the then Baptist Female University on April 23, 1900, di rected by Sophie S. Reynolds, Pro fessor of Elocution and Expres sion. While Meredith Performs will not stage the production as it was in 1900, we invite the Triangle community to share in the fun of our fresh production of the fantas tic A Midsummer Night’s Dream. On Sunday, April 5, we are invit ing alumnae and the general public to plan to spend the day as Meredith Performs strolls down memory lane for a Centennial Celebration that begins with an historical display honoring Sophie S. Reynolds in the Studio Theatre of Jones Hall from 2:00-3:00pm. Immediately following is the. matinee perfor mance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Main Stage of Jones Hall, 3:00pm) and ending with a reception with the Cast and Crew of the produc tion immediately following the perfor mance (Studio Theatre). An opportunity grew out of our learn ing that Peace College scheduled the same play to open only weeks before ours. As we enjoy promoting learning events for the Triangle community, both Meredith College Theatre and Peace College Theatre have collabo rated in inviting the general public to share in a symposium on A Midsum mer Night’s Dream. We will discuss production concepts, offer scenes from both productions,a and the directors, designers, casts,a and crews will be available to answer questions. The symposium will take place March 27 from 5:00-7:00pm in the Studio The atre of Jones Hall. In addition, any patron with a ticket stub from the Peace College Theatre production will be admitted to the Meredith College The atre production for one dollar. A Midsummer Night’s Dream will | be performed on the main stage oil Jones Hall April 2-4 and 9-11 at 8pm, with matinees on April 5 and 12 at 3pm. The Box Office will be open for reser vations March 19-April 10, 1:00- 4:0(^m, and an hour before perfor mances.
