April 10,1992 page Aree A Midsummer Night's Dream has magical aura by Amity Brown Neither Puck nor any of the other shattowsoffendedlastThursdaynight as Meredith Performs staged Wil liam Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In fact, every aspect of the produc tion directed by John Creagh was flawless, from the costumes to the acting. First, the costumes and scenery were entertaining by themselves. The set was both simple and elaborate, simple because it was not changed once during the play, and elaborate because it filled the Jones Audito rium stage with its platform and arches. The costumes, however, were truly eye-catching. Hermia (Valerie Bell) wore an aqua slip of a dress, making this reviewer wish that she too had long, thin legs. But it was the cos tumes of Oberon (Martin Thomp son), Titania (Quincy Beard), Puck (April Martin), and the other fairies that gave A Midsummer Night’s Dream the magical aura Shakespeare obviously intended. Draped in white translucent wraps that covered white shorts and tanks, the fairies aeated an otherworldly presence. Oberon, in his shredded spandex, and Titania, in similar shorts and a very brief halter, looked both mystical and re gal as the King and Queen of the Fairies. Though this Meredith Performs production was a feast for the eyes, it was a total performance, with the acting outshining the dazzling stag ing. Junior Valerie Bell (Hermia) and senior Sissy Winfree (Helena) were excellent as Bell pouted and Winfree went after her man. Senior Quincy Beard (Titania) offered yet another fine performance and showed a great deal of confidence while wear ing what could be an unreliable cos tume. However, freshman April Martin was the most exciting actor in her role as Puck. Martin maintained energy throughout the play and scam pered all over the set in true fairy fashion as if she really had lived there all her life. A Midsummer Night’s Dream con tinues through this weekend and is definitely worth attending. Call the box office at 829-2840 for ticket in formation.
