Campus News September 2, 1992 page four Oh Boy! More Morelock by Trista Schagat It was all smiles in the Office of College Communications, Tuesday, Sept. 1, while out side the office the second floor banister proudly displayed a sign reading “IT’S A BOY!” There was good cause to celebrate less than 24 hours before Jeannie Morelock, Director of College Communications, gave birth to a son, Matthew Michael Morelock, weighing 8 lbs. 9 oz. He is the first child of Morelock and her husband Judge Fred Morelock. A typical first mother, Morelock was ner vous about the anticipated “trials and tribula tions” of motherhood, said JoAnn Cota, Secre tary of College Communications. Cota said Morelock maintained a cheerful disposition through it all and was able to continue her busy schedule until about a week before her son was bom. Morelock became the Director of College Communications when the position was formed last July after a merger between the Office of Publications and the Office of Public Relations. The office created focuses on recruitment, ad missions, institutional advancement, student de velopment and general promotion of the Col lege, as well as redesigning the College Catalog and the Student Handbook. As the former Director of Public Re lations, Morelock has put a lot of time and effort into marketing Meredith to the pub lic and to prospective students. In the past, she has been responsible for coordi nating the production of a video about the College that was shown at the Baptist State Convention, coordinating the revi sion of a Meredith commercial that aired state-wideonPBS, and collaborating with the Meredith Choral Director and WR AL- TV to videotape a performance by the Meredith chorus that was nationally tele vised on the “CBS Morning Show.” Morelock has also worked with the Meredith license plate project, the United Way campaign for the College, and sev eral regional publications. Morelockis a graduate of North Caro lina State University and has been a mem ber of Meredith’s administrative staff since 1988. Dr. LaRose Spooner, Vice Presi dent of Administrative Affairs, describes Morelock as a delightful person and a file photo Jeannie Morelock, Director of College Communications, first-time mother. visionary. “Her friendly manner, strong leadership, and optimism have all combined to make her a re spected member of the Meredith community,” said Spooner. Le Greenhouse name change postponed by Jennifer Hartig One question plaguing students returning to Meredith this Fall has been, “Wasn’t ‘LeGreenhouse’ supposed to be changed to ‘Traditions’?” Last Spring, the Student Government Association worked in cooperation with Thad O’Briant, Food Service Director, to sponsor a name change for LeGreenhouse, Meredith’s own on-campus snack bar. Mary Snow Burnette, former Student Life Committee Chair, won the contest with her entry, ‘Traditions”. The idea behind “Traditions” was that the snack bar would be remodeled and decorated with pictures of different Meredith traditions, along with glass cases holding Cornhuskin’ sweatshirts and other Meredith paraphernalia. According to members of last year’s Executive Committee, SGA was given the go-ahead, and an article appeared in the Herald announcing the new name. When students returned to campus last week, many were surprised to find the same iron furniture and astro-turf carpet that we’ve grown so accustomed to over the years. In response to SGA’s concern over the issue. Dr. Sandra Thomas, Vice President for Student Development, explained that the decision was an executive one, made by her and Mr. Charles Taylor, Vice President for Business and Finance. According to Dr. Thomas, both divisions are currently looking into the use of space on campus by investigating how we can maximize Meredith’s already existing space and make future space usage more efficient. To sink our resources into remodeling LeGreenhouse would be less than wise if it were going to be moved or expanded in the future, she explained. No time frames were discussed. Dr. 'Thomas is, however, planning to meet with the SGA Executive Committee as soon as possible to discuss her ideas and get our input. As far as SGA’s credibility is concerned. Dr. 'Thomas assured us that the issue had nothing to do with the name chosen, but rather the financial aspects of the matter. Second Century Campaign -- record fundraising Office of College Communications Meredith College has recently completed its best fundraising year in the 101-year history of the Col lege. Dr. Murphy Osborne, Vice President of Institu tional Advancement, announced that gifts to the col lege during 1991-92 totaled almost $4.4 million dol lars. 'This included $1,345 million in unrestricted funds. Meredith also broke its previous record of the total quantity of gifts received in a single year; 5,776 gifts were made to Meredith in the 91-92 fiscal year. Dr. Osborne attributed the increase to the efforts of the Meredith College Board of Trustees, the Meredith Board of Associates, and to the continued loyalty of the college’s alumnae and friends. To date, Meredith has raised over $6.7 million dollars in pledges and gifts toward the $10.6 million dollar goal of the College’s Second Century Chal lenge Capital Campaign. Phihp J. Kirk, Jr. and Bar bara K. Allen, both of Raleigh, serve as co-chairs of the campaign effort.
