Volleyball team continues successful season
by Amy Whitt
The volleyball team won three
matches in a row before losing to
Lynchburg 3-1 on Saturday. Al
though the loss broke the team’s
winning streak, Coach Chamblee is
pleased with the way the team has
been playing.
The team beat Wesleyan 15-
3, 15-9, 16-14. Coach Chamblee
felt that her team was well prepared
and played well as a team. Beckie
Hines had strong hits, and setters
Kristi Narron and Jennifer Thomp
son got the ball to the hitters consis
tently.
Although the game against
Salem began slow, the team picked
up its intensity and began to get
things started. Beckie Hines pro
vided the team with 5-6 kills a game
and freshman Heather Shook played
the net well by blocking several of
Salem’s attempts to score.
The team played its best game up
to this pointonFridayagainst Randolph
MaconWoman’sCollege, winning 15-
17,15-8,15-9,15-5. Coach Chamblee
states, “Overall, we moved better and
our teamwork was much better.”
Sophomore Jamie Richards, a
middle hitter, had an outstanding game,
according to Chamblee. “She had great
blocking, was very aggressive, and
had about 5 kills a game,” Chamblee
said.
Things are looking good for the
team, and a big part of that is due to the
adjustment to its new defensive strate
gies. Jamie Richards is pleased with
the team’s improvement “I feel like
we’re really coming together as a
team,” she said.
The volleyball team has two up
coming home games; Tuesday, Octo
ber 6 at 6 p.m. versus Salem and Thurs
day, October 8 at 7 p.m. versus Mt.
Olive.
