Campus Extras September 30,1992 page eight Double your pleasure, double your fun...go see Singles I first saw the commercial for the movie Singles about a month ago and instantly I knew I had to see it. Being someone who recently has had bad luck in a relationship, I was curious to see how director Cameron Crowe {Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Say Any thing) perceives dating. I also wanted to get a male point of view on the flick, so I dragged a friend of mine to help me out. With these curiousities in mind, I set out to see if Crowe could capmre the “hell” known as dating. Singles is set in Seattle and revolves around a group of friends living in the same apartment complex and chronicles their love relationships. The two couples that the film centers around are Cliff and Janet (Matt Dillon and Bridgett Fonda) and Steve and Linda (Campbell Scott and Kyra Sedgewick). Cliff and Janet have the best storyline, which is surprising consideringtheyaren’t the spotlight couple. Cliff is a bad, hardcore-alternative musician who has a scorching case the the wan dering eye and feels he is immune to the concept of commitment. Janet, who yearns for commitment, is Cliffs girlfriend. She has a na ive, girl-next-door charm who shows throught in her to decision to get breast implants to keep Cliff. The second couple, Steve and Linda, are the sophisticated couple who fall in love, then out of love. In the end things somehow fall into place, but only after a few breakups and major obstacles to jump. What really gives Crowe’s film the edge over most relationship films is the use of visual and verbal imag ery. Crowe also has a tremendous insight into the ways in which men and women come together and fall apart. Personally, Singles struck me as true to life, and I could relate to more than one situation between the couples. As for my male counter part, he felt that the film was realistic, but like most men he couldn’t give me a straight answer.
