page three October 21,1992 -Campus Editorial Point Counterpoint It is not surprising that more viewers tuned in last week to watch the presidential debates than the World Series. Never before have the American people had so much at stake in an election. Unemployment is up, real incomes are down, health care costs are up, and consumer confidence is down. America is desperate for a change. Governor Bill Clinton shined in the debates, winning all three, accord ing to opinion polls of every major network. He appeared informed, relaxed and confident throughout the debates. Clinton welcomed the opportunity to answer questions about genuine political issues. He was especially eager to address the concerns of the American people and was most at ease in the public forum in Richmond, Va. In contrast. Bush appeared testy, defensive and, at times, disinterested. During the Richmond debate, he checked his watch at least twice on camera and became upset with a woman who questioned his understanding of the real problems with the economy. In the Michigan debate. Bush once again seemed disinterested, forgetting the question more than once. The debates were an overwhelming example of why Bill Clinton is the best choice in the upcoming elec tion: Gov. Clinton is in touch with the American people; George Bush is not. During the course of the debates, Clinton pre sented his proposals for change. His top priority, if elected, is the economy. He Kelly Phillips Beth Lowry Senior Senior Major: History Major: Political Minor: Math Studies Hampstead, NC Cary, NC wants to provide middle class tax relief while requiring the wealthy (incomes above $200,000) and foreign corporations to pay their fair shares. Clinton also proposes stimulating job growth by investing in new technology and renovating the current infrastructure. Gov. Clinton wil keep {x-oductivity and wages high by promoting manufacturing in the United States rather than by sending it across the border to Mexico. He also stated that he supports NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) if, and only if, provisions were included to protect U.S. workers and the environment. Health care would also be a top priority in a Clinton administration. Clinton outlined is plans for a national health care system. This plan would provide basic health care for all Americans. Clinton also detailed his plans for educational reform. These plans include Headstart programs for preschoolers, vocational education for those who choose not to go to college and a new financial aid package for college- bound students. This package would allow students to pay off loans either as a percentage of their income once employed or by service in a domestic peace corps (public service as a police officer, member of the armed forces, teacher, etc.). Women’s issues and minority issues were also major components of Clinton’s platform. Gov. Clinton supports AIDS research, family leave and a woman’s right to choose. Chnton also acknowledges the struggle of women During the presidential debates, many Americans have commented that the candidates are spending too much time attacking one another’s character than concentrating on the policy issues. Many point a finger at President Bush because of his questioning of Bill Clinton’s character. I agree with the President - character is a very important issue, especially when the person in question is running for the office of President of the United States. Voters must know who they are voting for. How can voters even consider voting for a man to be leader of their country when just a few years ago the same man was leading protests against it? This is something voters must consider and weigh in November. For the past four years. President Bush has proven himself as leader of the United States. His astute knowledge and capability in foreign affairs have brought an end to the Cold War. Because of his leadership, Americans can go to bed at night without the worry of nuclear war. No American could have imagined at the beginning of the 1980’s that the Iron Curtain would collapse and the Soviet Union would crumble by the end of that decade. The Soviet Union had invaded Afghanistan, and Eastern Europe was living in fear and under oppressed conditions. We had faith in the leadership of Ro nald Reagan and George Bush to lead us through these uncer tain times. Those Republican leaders did so with triumph. Communism in the former So viet Union and Eastern Europe is non-existent, and Eastern Europeans no longer live in fear and oppressed conditions. Now Americans are uncertain about the United States’ economy. Ameri cans must keep the faith in Republican leadership. Change for change’s sake is not the answer. Gov. Clinton says that because of the current administration, America is falling apart at the seams. We are the world’s superpower. Eastern Europeans were inspired at what they saw and heard about America. They had faith that they could make their countries’ democracies just like the United States. If Bill Clinton has little or no faith in America, why should we have faith in him as president? see Clinton page six What does Cornhuskin* mean to you? What do you love most about Cornhuskin'?
