The new members are Sarah Barnes, Carla Cashwell, Amy Clark, Annette Green, Tracy Salter, Paige Smith, Jennifer Tingen, and Lorelei Watts. Dr. Charles Davis, Pi Mu Epsi lon advisor, began the induction cer emony with a brief history of the soci ety. Pi Mu Epsilon is the mathematics honor society. It was founded in 1914 at Syracuse University for the purpose of recognizing excellence in mathemat- CLINTON continued from page two and minorities to have fair refxesenta- tion in income, jobs and politics. He hopes to see a minority candidate in the Oval Office in his lifetime and has a record of utilizing the skills of women and minorities in top posts. Bush, on the other hand, accused a female re porter of being “defensive” when she questioned his lack of females in top posts in his current administration. President Bush’s stance on minority and women’s issues is quite different from that of Gov. Clinton, who be lieves, “We don’t have a person to waste in America.” The American people know where Bill Clinton stands on the is sues. He used the debates for the pur- ics and for promoting scholarly activity among academic and non- academic institutions. The local chapter. North Carolina Mu, was chartered at Meredith College in 1989 and now has a significant number of mem bers. Garnett Jones, Pi Mu Epsilon President, introduced each new member and presented her with a certificate and pin. The induction was official when the new mem bers’ signatures were recorded in the permanent register book. In closing, Davis led the Pi Mu Epsi lon pledge taken by the inductees. pose they were intended: to in form on the issues, not to attack or surmise or pass judgment. Bush was so busy doing the latter that, after three debates. I’m still not sure what his plans for “economic renewal” are. Beyond appointing James Baker, maybe he doesn’t have any. At the Democratic Coordi nating Campaign, on St. Mary’s Street, there is a real sense of opti mism. Volunteers are encouraged by Clinton’s high marks after the debates. She may have a full draft to review with a tutor, a list of topic ideas to brainstorm, or a work in progress. While the tutor will not proofread work, she will help the student identify the strengths and weaknesses of her own writing. The Writing Center also offers standing weekly appointments for students who need to work on grammar, research projects, journals, and other on-going assignments. I have been a Writing Center tutor for the past few semesters, and I really enjoy it Working in the center helps me keep my own writing skills sharp. (And as an English major at Meredith, I need every advantage I can get!) Although I have yet to take a political science course, reading the research people bring in helps keep me on top of politi cal theory and trend. I have been impressed particu larly by the support Tlie Writing Center gets from the faculty. Many instructors provide the tutors with outlines and notes for what they value in a composition. We just may have a file on that professor whose as signment you’re struggling with right now. Following are some tips to make your trip to The Writing Center an especially productive one: • Bring a copy of the assign ment or the notes you took when the professor gave the assignment. • If you have questions about quoting or documenting, come in with the book or article so the tutor can see the source you’re working with. • Write down your questions in advance; the 30-minute sessions fly by, and having a list will help the tutor cover everything you want her to. • If you’re taking English 111 and facing the competency test, be sure to attend the review sessions Tbe Writing Center of fers to help you prepare. Times will be posted soon. To make an appointment, call 829-2800 or stop by The Writing Center in 122 Jones to sign up.
