Everyone is talking and no one is listening — that is until a familiar voice rises above the din, calling for attention. Suddenly all eyes are forward and another sea son of Comhukin’ is un der way. For the past four years the familiar voice has been that of Mandy Dill, Comhuskin’ chair for ,the class of 1993. Although Dill and the class of ’93 have worked enthusiastically during each Corn- huskin’, this year things came to gether as the Senior class won first place. Dill, who has lived in Ra leigh for several years, is an Home Economics major getting certified Mandy interviews a fellow senior at a '93 - '95 pep rally. in secondary educatioa She is also a North Carolina Teaching Fellow. Perhaps the biggest challenge re garding Comhuskin’ is getting orga nized. A Comhuskin’ committee over sees such activities as props, skit pa rade, tall tale, songs, hog calling and sweatshirt design. In the early stages ideas for each are selected and set into motion. From there on out a great deal of plotting, planning and organizing takes place. In addition to chairing the Comhuskin’ committee, this year Dill helped with the production of the senior slide show. According to her roommate Jan Gunn, one way Dill puts things in perspective is with a giant calen dar containing all the practice dates, meetings and other important de tails. Along with her ability to orga nize, Dill has experience and enthu siasm in her comer. One of her classmates points out that she “couldn’t see anyone else who had the patience and energy” to tackle the job every year. While it is easy to see that Dill is very successful at motivating oth ers, what has kept her enthusiastic about Comhuskin’ for the past four years? Her roommate explains that Dill feeds off the energy of the Class of 1993. “Mandy feels motivated by the class,” Gunn explains, “she wants them to know she will work hard.” Record amount raised for Penny Barrels by Amity Brown Through the Astrotekton Society’s Comhuskin’ PennyBar- rels, about $2000 was raised by Meredith students to pay for a Dunn, N.C. boy’s trip to Disneyworld in Florida. Six-year-old Brandon Stanley, currently under out-patient treat ment for leukemia at UNC-Chapel Hill Memorial Hospital, went to Disneyworld with his grandmoth ers, Oct. 21, through the Eastern North Carolina chapter of the WOLFPACK i6* PIZZA &2SODAS $7.33 2 SMALL 2'TOPPJNGS &2SODAS Make-A-Wish Foundation. According to Tammi George, Astros President, the money raised will go to reimburse the money taken from the Make-A-Wish general fund, which paid for Stanley’s trip. “I really think it shows a lot about Meredith, fliat we are a sharing com munity, that once we get out in the world we will still give back to our community,” George said. Stanley, along with his parents and other relatives, attended Comhuskin’ Thursday night. He walked out on the island for George to introduce him and was greeted with the chant “Brandon, Brandon!” j “Brandoncouldn’tunderstandhow j everyone knew his name,” George said. Penny Barrels are sponsored by the Astros every year at Comhuskin’. Each class has its own barrel, and students are urged to contribute dur ing Comhuskin’ week. According to Penny Barrels mles, pennies and paper add to a class’ total, while silver subtracts. This year the Senior class raised the most money ever by a single class with $952.31. The Juniors came in second with $249.12, the Sophomores third with $45.08, and the Freshmen fourth with $34.37. The remainder of the approximately $20CX) came from silver put in com peting classes’ barrels. solo 12“ 1 -TOPPING PIZZA' ^ .2 LARGE &:ieSODA ' 'J;T0PPINGPIZZA ; "B ' $5.28 500 per item for additional iteRK j :$9.90 FAST, FREE DELIVERY 836-1555 DiscavB?
