Baptist State Convention ruling allows
colleges autonomy in choosing trustees
by Tracey Rawls
Delegates to the Baptist State
Convention decided Tuesday to al
low a dozen convention agencies
and institutions more autonomy in
choosing trustees.
“This step, which was
achieved with broad support, saves
North Carolina Baptists from going
through the same painful experi
ence suffered by South Carolina
Baptists when they lost Furman
University,’’ said Marse Grant, edi-
toremeritus of the Biblical Recorder.
The proposal. The Report of
the Instituitons Relationship Study
Commute, called for the allowance
of “up to one-fourth of the trustees
or directors of each college, univer
sity, social service institution. Bib
lical Recorder and Foundation” to
be members of Southern Baptist
churches outside of NC. The re
maining trustees and directors “must
be members of Baptist churches af
filiated with the Baptist State Con
vention.” All trustees and directors
would be elected by the Conven
tion. Previously, the Convention had
nominated all trustees and direc
tors.
The report also called for al
lowing the institutions or agencies
to nominate up to one-half of the
trustees or directors, “with a corre
sponding reduction in Cooperative
Program support” For example, if
the institution nominated 40% of
their trustees, then Cooperative Pro
gram support would be reduced by
40%.
