Campus Editorial February 3. 1993 page two In our society, it is oot politi- caUy correct to malce jokes about Jews or say the word “nigger.” Blacks do not sit at the back of the bus anymore, women have greater chances of getting jobs, and ho mosexuals are openly acceptedin the military. Right. Just as a per son cannot control her race or ethnicity and just as most hetero sexuals do not question the origin of their sexuality, homosexuals have biologically-determined sexual orientation; therefore, ho- mosexuals should not be discriminated against. The main argument against lifting the ban on ho mosexuals in the military is the fear mo rale will go down. Homosexuals are in the military now. What dif ference win make to make it legal for them to be there? And what Iracey Rawls about morale now? When three Marines feel they have the right to beat up a gay civilian for no rea son other than their prejudice against him, that is a morale prob lem. Another argument against lift ing the ban on homosexuals is that homosexuals will begin leering at and making suggestive comments to heterosexuals. This is absurd. What makes these people think that homosexuals are going to be attracted to them? Homosexual men tend to seek out other homosexual men. People then argue that all the homo- sexu^.menare going to start having sex with each other and create one big orgy. This is also i^surd. I believe that Ms. Sklopan needs to open her eyes and look into history. Ever since the Revolu tionary War, the United States has held a position of world power due to the world’s depen dency on our strength as a na tion. We have never walked up to a country involved in a war and asked to take part in it for fun. We have always helped in the war because we were asked; not because we have soldiers that the heads of state love to send to forwgii countries. We have always been there to help the underdog in a war when our assistance was asked for. We went to Panama to help with the fight against Manuel Noriega. We went to Saudi Arabia to fight against the world’s next Hitler. What would have happened if we had not gotten involved in WorldWarII?Hitlerwouldhave still been in control and the world would be a very Ufferent place. If we had not gone over to Saudi Arabia and showed Saddam Hussein that he could not get away with an act of aggression ofthat magnitude, we wouldhave another Hitler on our hands. Matter-of-fact we had majority of the Arab nations’ support and we still have it I’m sorry, but if an aggressor like Saddam Hussein came to power in Canada, we would want some one to come protect our borders if we were unable to protect them ourselves. We won’t enter the war in Bosnia-Herzegovinia be cause it is a civil war. They do □ot need outside help coming in and fighting their fight for them. The incessant fighting with Iraq is to let Saddam know that he is always going to be watched and he will always be under close scrutiny because of what he did. He has never fully cooperated with the resolutions that ended Desert Storm. In the resolutions that ended the war. one of them stated that there would be a no-fly zone in Iraq to prevent further at tacks on Kuwait or the other neigh bors of Iraq. Therefore, the no-fly zone was brought before the U.N., passed, and supported. If they are not supported, then why did the French and English air forces take part in the air attack with the U.S. Air Force? Many of the Arab na tions such as Saudi Arabia and Israel support us against Iraq. Is rael said that if we went to war they would support us. Our attacks will make Saddam Hussein realize that he is always under a watchful eye of the world until he is out of power. If we go to war with Iraq again, it would be the same as the first Desert Storm. As for the economic situation, the deficit was not caused by the war itsetfTWe have always loaned money to other countries to rebuild or in support of a new government The deficit has been around since President Johnson andi t has grossly increasedoverthelasttwodecades. However, in an attempt to get rid of the deficit, tiiere have been mili tary cuts over the past two years. The U.S.S. Missouri has been de commissioned in hopes of cutting back the military budget You ne glected to mention that the govern ment has been trying to make cuts to reduce the deficit The manufac turing of cruise missiles has been reduced to almost none. There re ally is no use for military weapons when there are not any enemies. The United States would not be making the mistake if they tried anything. It would be Saddam Hussein, and that mistake would be corrected by the rest of the world.
