Meredith co-sponsors event to encourage women in math by Karen Howell “Gee, madiis tough!” Those words the talking Barbie uttmd sem shiv ers down the spines of women and mathematicians all across the coun try. The efforts of numerous people to encourage girls in mathematics and computer science were mocked by those few words. Numerous stud ies have shown that girls ’ mathemati cal skills (tecrease once they reach junior high and high school due in part to a lack of attention fix>m teach ers. Women and Mathematics (W AM) is an organization which promotes awareness of mathematics and com puter science for young girls by in troducing them to women who use mathem^cs and computer science in their careers. Meredith College is involved in WAM because Dr. Vir ginia Knight, head of the Math/Com puter Science department, is one of the coordinators of the North Caro lina WAM (Mx>gram, supported in large part by Northern Telecom. Garnett Jones, Scottie Eustis, Carla Cashwell and Karen Howell all work with the (M-ogram arranging school visits and getting information to girls about the practical applications of mathematics and computer science. On February 10, 1993, Sonya Kovalesky Day will be held at Meredith. This event is sponsored by the North Carolina region of WAM in conjunction with Meredith Col lege. During Sonya Kovalesky Day, the shidents wiU listen to women desaibe how they use math and com puters in their careers, see computer demonstrations and gather infonna- tion about in mathematics and com puter science. Several Meredith fac ulty members, as well as students, will also be talking with the visiting students. Sonya Kovalesky was world-re- nowned woman mathematician of nineteenth century. Unable to attend a university because she was female, Kovalesky was taught privately. When the time came to complete her doctorate, she was required to present a dissertation. Ambitious and ex tremely determined, Kovalesky pre sented three dissertations and was then exempted from the other two requirements for earning adoctorate. She was directly awarded the degree of DocK>rof Philosofdiy. In addition, her dissertations were publi^ied in the most serious mathematics publi cation in Germany, an honor given only a few accomplished math ematicians. She was the first woman to earn a HtD. in mathematics and the first woman to hold a universi^ position. So if you see these young students around campus Wednesday, smile and tell them you’re glad they like math. Math might not be your favor ite subject, but we are out to show these girls math can lead to great careers and can even be fun! Meredith receives Reynolds grant Meredith College has announced the College has received a grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, Inc.
