North Carolina Board of trustees approves open house policy News Rrieis • The White House rejected United Nations Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali's sugges tion to send ground troops to push Serbian forces out of Muslim ar- easof Bosnia. Presidential spokes man George Stephanopoulos said Monday that the White House has no plans to send troops to the former Yugoslavia. »An FBI spokesman said Mon day that David Koresh wants an "all-out fight" with the govern ment at his fortified compound so he can die a martyr. Koresh, a self- proclaimed Christ and leader of the Branch Davidians, has been holed up in his compound near Waco, Texas, with over a hundred other members of the cult since Feb. 28. ♦ About two dozen Muslims gathered at the Islamic Center of Raleigh to fffay Monday. They said they are distressed by stereotypes that connect their religion to ter rorism. After a Muslim was ar rested Thursday in connection with the World Trade Center bombing, Muslims have been defending their religion. Many said the situation in Waco, Texas, has not been deemed a Christian crime, so the act of terrorism by Muslims should not refiect on their religion. •• After winning the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, the ECU Pirates have an invitation to the NCAA tournament. TTiis will be ECU's first appearance in the tournament since 1972. The pairings for the NCAA tournament will be announced Sunday at 6:30 p.m. •TheCarolinaTarheelsdefeated the Duke Blue Devils Sunday, 69- 83. by Karen Howell, Residence Hall Board chair On Friday March 5, Neasha Bryant, Senate chair, and Karen Howell, Residence Hall Board (RHB) chair, met with the Student Development Committee of the Board of Trustees to present the temporary Open House proposal. The trustees were openly impressed with the obvious thought and effort that had gone into preparing the proposal and its guidelines. They had numerous questions regarding issues such as safety and the rights of the students. They voiced con cern about the wishes of those stu dents who did not choose to have visitors. One suggestion made was to have each residence hall decide at the beginning of the year whether or by Frances Pate Are you looking for a way to get more involved on campus? If you are, why not consider running for a campus-wide office? Starting this week students can get information about offices in all of the organizations on campus. There are open offices in all of the major organizations such as the Meredith Entertainment Associa tion, the Meredith Recreation Asso ciation, and the Meredith Christian Association, as well as lesser known organizations such as Smdent Life, Elections Board, Publications Board, and the Residence Hall Board. Students can also run for a class office. Anyone interested in running for either campus or class office must not they want their residence hall to participate in visitation. After their concerns were addressed, the com mittee members gave their support to the proposal. During the afternoon meeting of the full Board, Jean Batteo Cooper (Class of ’54), chair of the Student Development Committee, presented the temporary Open House proposal, adding that her committee supported the students’ actions. Later Jennifer Hartig,SGAPresident, gave her semi annual report, briefly mentioning the work turn on the Open House pro posal. According lo Hartig, neither she nor Cooper received any ques tions or concerns from the members ofthe Boardregarding theissue. TTius, after receiving support from the Sen ate, Student Life Committee, and the Board of Trustees, the final decision attend one of two workshops to be held on Wednesday, March 10,8 p.m. and Friday, March 12,10 a.m. Both meetings will be held in 204 Harris. According to Jill Barlow, Elections Board Chair, the workshops are held in order for the board to see who is interested inrunning. Students will be able to ask questions about the elec tion process. regarding the proposal will be made by Dr. Sandra Thomas, Vice-Presi dent for Student Development. According to Bryant, she and Howell would like ^ thank all the members of Senate and Residence Hall Board who worked on the pro posal and the guidelines. While one opinion prevailed, all opinions are important The proposal and guide lines seek to serve all students, whether by allowing them to partici pate in the Open House, or by pro tecting their privacy should they choose not to participate. The dis cussion that this topic generated is greatly appreciated. If and when a permanent proposal is made, one would hope that the students will once again participate in similar dis cussions and meetings, and make their opinions known. Students can file for campus-wide offices until March 19 and can file for class offices until March 26. Barlow said there are Election Board notebooks in every parlor which will explain each office and what its job entails.
