Campus Editorial March 31.1993 page two ■Letters to the Editor- In February of this year, Presi- deot Clioton proposed a $2 per pack tax oo cigarettes to help pay fx the health care refoim. As a farina’s daughter, I am very much against this tax. All of my life I have lived on a tobacco-producing farm, and f^uming has provided our liveli hood. N(^ only my fother but also my mother is involved in the to bacco business because she owns andoperatesatobacco warehouse. Myfomilyisonly one of thousands of farmers who would be put out of business be cause of this tax. My family, as well as the other thousands of farmers, would lose our home and our family form. My family, just like all the others, has farmed all their lives, and farming is all they know how to do. 1 am graduating from college in May of this year, and 1 had planned to retura home and work with my parents on the farm and in the warehouse. 1 love the farm and the work involved in farming. If this tax is ^proved, then not only will my parents be out of a job, but I will also. Not only would this tax take away my job, but it would rob my family of everything that is so special to us: such as our home, our ^rm, and our means of making a living. This tax would prove detrimental to farmers, their families, and the tobacco industry in North Carolina. During Clinton’s campaign, he promised to bring jobs back to the American people and not take them away. He prom- isedtobefor the Ameri can farmers and not against them. This tax is against the farmer and will put an end to the American to bacco industry. With this new tax. North Carolina alone would lose over 70.000 jobs, and this loss does not include the loss of jobs in Rorida, Georgia, South Carolina, see EDITORIAL page three Beth Fisher Senior Major; Business Meredith Herald F^Jtor in ('hwr Aniii« Rrxmu l^ivulKilitur Bwdnftt Miingcr Co|tjr Kdttnr >awl>4liMr VMtarM Mllnr Vjuab Aihifwtr fiiaalMmier J^nncesl^itte, iri Sani ^ 1 hnHbukl^i'plCk.Sdrib liaciLmu, JjtkieWchb M’rlten. I have really begun to look forward to the publication each Wednes day. It is great K> have a newspa per that now comes out at a consistent time each week, llie copy is also im|MX>ved very much with editorials such as point- counterpoint and the very touch ing personal experiences. I just wanted to say that the staff is doing an excellent job on keeping the Meredith commu nity up to date and informed on current issues a&d issues con cerning us as women. I also be lieve that with this improvement peo{de will continue to exiR'ess their opinions and experiences throughout the newspaper be cause of the professional atti tude you have delivered to the student body. Congratulations Meredith Herald staff, and keep up the great work! Angela Pridgen, sophomore Student defends security For the past three years I have spent at least ten hours a week in the office of security as a student worker. Over the three years I have realized just how security is treated by everyone around campus. The student body, as well as the faculty, can’t be pleased; however, it is impos sible to please everyone. In my opinion, if everyone would just give security the support they need, more duties could be ac complished. It seems to me that the re sponsibility of security is to pa trol campus, give tickets and boots when needed, and do bank runs for the accounting office. It isn’t security’s duty to go pick up vans for every department on cam pus and service all vehicles on cam pus. Students complain that tickets are given somedays and other days they are not given. It is hard give tickets when you’re having to run all over town to do errands for ev erybody else. Working in security is a losing battle. Now don’t get me wrong, 1 wouldn’tchange the past three years of where I have worked for any thing. Security isn’t as bad as ev erybody makes them out to be. Fac ulty complain about students’ be ing in their parking spaces, while some faculty park where ever they want to even if there is not a space for them to park ia Students com plain that tickets aren’tbeinggiven enough, yet when one of those stu dents complaining parks out of [dace and receives a ticket, then they com plain about that. Now do you un derstand what I mean about “Secu rity can’t ever win!” Another complaint is about 3rd shift security. Only three officers are on duty during the 3rd shift (that is all security’s budget can allow). One must remain in the gatehouse at all times while the other two officers patrol csmipus, lock up dorms and classroom buildings, and let girls in after closing hours. It is impossible to be everywhere at the same time. For example, if six girls come in at the same time after clos ing hours, an officer can’t possibly let all of them into their dorms at the same time, especially if two are going K> Vann, two to Haircloth, one to Poteat, and another to Heilman. Somebody is just going to have to wait. Tlie whole reason behind my see LETTERS page three Correction In the March 24, 1993, edidon of the Herald, we idendfled Janine Russell as Jeaneen Logan in one of tiie pictures from Little Friends Weekend. Also, in the baskeU>all pictures, we identified Kim Taylor as Trisha Sparks. We apologize for any inconvenience our enrors may have caused.
