»The North Carolina Tarheels
men's basketball team defeated the
Miclugan Wolverines, 77-71,
Monday night to win the NCAA
championship. The win gave the
Tarheels their third national cham
pionship win and Coach Dean
Smith his second. The last time the
Tarheels won the championship
was in 1982 in the Lousiana
Superdome. The win marked the
third straight championship title
for a Triangle team -- the Duke
Blue Devils won the last two
championships.
•• The trial of three Camp
Lejeune Marines accused of beat
ing Crae Pridgen outside a gay bar
in Wilmington began Monday.
Four witnesses testified that a
Marine threw the first punch when
the fight broke out. One witness
said the Marine acted after a bar
patron made offensive sexual re
marks . Hie three Marines fttce four
misdemeanor assault charges in
connection with the January 29
incident at (he Mickey Ratz bar.

Monday that he will take over as
chairman of the Air Cargo Au
thority. Local leaders said this
move is necessary if the proposed
Global TransPark is to get off the
ground. The concept of the park is
to have factories close to the air
port so parts can be flown directly
to the plants. The complex, which
woul d be located in Ki nston, woul d
encompass 4,000 to 6,000 acres.
The industrial park would be built
around (he facility, comprising up
to 50,000 acres.
••The Florida Marlins, an ex
pansion team, defeated the Los
Angles Dodgers 6-3 Monday in
Joe Robbie Stadium. Joe
DiMaggio tossed out the first pitch.
