On-campus credit card offers convenience

‘TORECAST: Colleges are moving towards
the cashless society, where one debit card buys
meals, books—evenlsuiodry.” So says the Janu
ary 1990 issue of Changing Times Magazine.
In the fall of 1993, the cashless society will be a
reality on the Meredith campus when the new
CamCard is introduced, and students begin to use
their own version of the “plastic money” on cam
pus. Resident students will use CamCard to ac
cess the traditional full-service dining plan, and
commuters can choose from several meal plans
avaUable in Belk Dining Hall.

If you’re a rising sophomore, you already have
your new ID card. If you’re a rising junior or
senior, you’ll obtain your new card in the fall.
Before anyone begins to use the new CamCard,
the magnetic stripe on the reverse of the card must
be activated You’ll have an opportunity to do this
at the beginning of the fall semester. You’ll also
find a new location for the CamCard office — at
the front of the third floor of Johnson Hall, just off
the Rotunda.
If you want to take advantage of CamCard’s
“Secure Spending” feature, money can be depos
ited to your account this summer. The summer
mailing will provide you all the necessary instruc
tions.

want to get involved herself. She just wanted to tell
us about the information as a point of information.
Thanks. Now we know some^ng about which we
can do nothing because we have no proof. Yet
another rule 1^ been broken and nobody cares to
help us out. We appreciate people’s interest in
upholding the Honor Code but wish they would
follow through with the incident
Fire drills are yet anottier pet peeve where disre
gard for rules is concerned. As RHB chair, 1 have
been responsible for overseeing fire drills and
toniado drills for the past two years. I am well
aware of the fact that aU of you hate fire drills. Let
me assure you that they were not invented as a form
of torture. Their purpose is to prepare you in the
event of an actual emergency. The only real con
cerning fire drills is that you participate. However,
that is still ttx) much to ask of some of you. I feel
responsibility to all of the resident students where
fire drills are concerned. If a real fire ever occurred,
I have no doubt that some students would be
injured or even die because they did not know what
to do or where to go. This cUsregard for procedure
is di^artening. Many of you swear to me that if
we had an actual fire, you would know and would
follow procedure. I hope so but I’m not sure. Last
year the alarm went off in Poteat and we did not
know why for several minutes. I told students it
was not a drill but my words fell on deaf ears. The
students were more o>ncemed with not getting
their feet wet. So next time before you decide that
a rule is dumb and you should bre^ it, see if you
can figure out why the rule was established. Trust
me, we have much better things to do with our time
than sit around and make up useless rules. There is
a reason why we have rules.
