According to the report submitted by the Continuing Education Advi sory Committee, the group focused on "the internal operations of the [re* entry] program as it serves nontraditional-age students and the inq)act of this {^gram on the college as a whole." During the 1991 >92 academic year, 21 percent of Mereditii undergradu ates were re-entires, 14 percent of them full-time students. Accoridng to the report, the com mittee gathered information through ’’samplings of opinion from the Meredith community, including students, faculty and administration, current literature on adult education and conversations with those heading re-entryptfogramsatinstitiitions simi- by Mitdiell Brown At the end of each semester the Honor Council makes avall^le to the Meredith community a list of all of the cases tiie Coundl heard tiiat semester, the verdict for each of these cases, and the penalty levied when necessary. It is important K> understand that with each case the Honor Council takes lar to Meredith.” As a result of the study the committee recommended adjustments be made in instructed' dekings witii mixed*age classes, sm> dents' attitudes toward each other and services offered to commuting students. "We wanted to (»x>vide flie best service for all studetns,' said Aime Dahle of Continuing Education; While the committee studied tiie programinavarietyofways, itbased much of its information on a survey distributed to traditional-age sopho- mcnres and seniors and to all re-entry students in the fall of 1992. The sur- veyincluded statements aboutfaulty/ re-entry interactions, traditional*age/ re-entry relation^ps, classroom at- mosph^ and campus involvement Some inconsistencies were reported about perceptions of classroom ten sion between traditional-age and re* entry students. Dahle accounts for some of the differences in perceptions by saying, into account all mitigating and ag gravating ^tors, and as a result the penalties may diff^ from case to case even if the different cases have the same charge. "Re-entries are so pleased with the program. They are justplain delighted to be a member of a caucus of this sort, so they may not notice any classroom tension." Because the committee and the college recognize the re-entry popu lation may reach 20 percent of the student population, tiie committee suggested "th^ the college welcome the real contributions of re-entry students and work to integrate these students more fully into the life of the college, that for the next few years the college monitor enrollment trends and evaluate the in^>aa on campus of changes in the ratio of re entries to traditional-age smdents, and that in three years the Dean of Continuing Education request acom- otittee be appointed to conduct a study similar to this one." Dr. Brent Pitts, who served on the committee, summed up its work by saying, "We hope there will be more awareness of the impact of the re entry program on the college as a result of this study."
