For the past two weeks the bot^ question around has been “Would you sleep with a stranger for $1 million?” The movie that has sparked this burn ing question is director Adrian Lyne’s new release Indecent Proposal. Indecent Proposal is the story of a very l^ipily married couple, David (Woody Harrelson) and Diana (Demi Moore) Murphy, and what happens when slick businessman John Gage (Robert Redford) offers them $1 mil lion for a night with Diana. The ques tion at first seems insulting to the couple. Alter a night of restless sleep and the rationalizatioo that if ttiey ac cept they can finish the dream home they came to Las Vegas to salvage, it becomes almost a business deal to the couple. “After all,” Diana says, ‘It’s justmy body, not my heart” UnfHlunately it is Diana’s body that turns the marriage sour. After vowing to never discuss wh^ happened, David b^mes so jeal ous he demands to know what went on. Diana refuses to tell him, and David leaves ttie marriage, almost pushing Diana back into the arms of Gage. AAer a few we^ of moping, David finally gets his professional life back together, and Diana gets wined and dined by the dapper Gage. The final thirty minutes of the film bring about an expected ending, but it’s just sappy enough to work and to pull a few tears fi-om your eyes. Indecent Proposal would have worked a little bit better had it n^ followed in the footsteps of two other movies where there was a sw^your-woman-for-cash theme {Hmeymoon in Vegas^ndMadDog and Glory). There were also a few inconsistencies ttiatcouldhavebeen remedied When the «)uple finds out their property has been sold, why don’t they go out and buy a new [dot of land — they have $1 million! And why would Diana go back to G^e? The man ruins her marriage and steals her proper^. I guess be was reaUy good. As a matter of foct, Redford was good. He may be getting a little long in the tooth, but he still has his beautiflil golden boy looks and {days the part of a confident purveyor of fine goods to a tee. Moore’sperfor- mance wasn’t spectacular, but she definitely has the body for the sex HONOR continued from page six down, 6) Academic dishonesty. The Honor Council has also changed the mandatory appearance for exiting a locked door after clos ing hours to an automatic penalty. If a student exits a locked door after closing hours, she is to turn herself in to her RA or RD, at which point she will be issue three call-downs and given a $15 fine to be paid to accounting. The student has the right to make a final appeal of this deci sion to the Honor Council. Hie Honor Council officers for the 1993-94yearare Angela Toms, chair; Hannah Simmonds, solicitor general; Ashley Skidmore, support counselor. scenes. Harrelson did himself a great service by accepting this role. He’s gone from country bumpkin in Doc Hollywood to a slick hustler in White Men Can’t Jump and now plays a heartbrokenhusbandin/n2ecen/Pn7- posal — a role that continues to add to his range. Hopefully, he’ll con tinue his movie career now that Cheers is going off the air this year. Some of the best lines, though, come fi’om bitplayers. The Mur^Aiys’ lawyer is hysterical delivering lines like, “I know! could have gotten $2 million for her—I couldn’t get $5(X) for my girlfiiend.” Another notable funny line comes from a man in a crowd at the blackjack t^le where Gage has procured David’s wife for good luck. As she walks away with Gage, the man asks David, “You think she’ll come back?” The camera work, for those of you who like the technical aspects, is incredible. One scene in particular that got my sMention is when David and Diana are watching the marble go around the roulette wheel on their final money-losing bet. As 0ie wheel ^ins around, the camera spins around with the marble, giving the viewer a revolving effect. Also, for those of you concerned with the sex scenes (especiallyttioseofyouonfirst dates), they are not very up-close. If any thing, they are tastefully real. If you haven’t made it out to the MOVING? theatre to check this one out yet. I say get out there now and see it. Indecent Proposal is not spectacular, but it is good. If you’re in a relationship you think is stable and you’re one of this people who say no to the $1 million questlcm, you need to go see it It will make you think long and hard about whether or noteveryone has a price. Like the Murj^ys’ lawyer says while trying to soothe David about his deci sion, “Hey, for $1 million, I would have slept with him.” Since this is the last Herald until next semester. I won’t be 2d>le to help any of you who look to me for advice about the movies over the summer, but I do want to recommend two films I think are going to be block busters if nothing else. Check out The Firm, a courtroom drama based on the novel by best-selling author John Grisham. The Firm will star Tom Cruise, and if you’ve read the book, you know this will be one intense film. Also try to check out Jurassic Park, another movie based on a best selling book, this time by Michael Creighton. The movie is being touted as this summer’s box office smash and is already being heavily mer chandised. Jurassic Park is about a theme park constructed by scientists who have learned how to reproduce the long-extinct dinosaur. I hope you have a great summer, and I hope to see you next year. u» nscouNT wrra VALID mnsNT ID Xet 'Zfie ‘Everts Jit snipping Connection ^acHi & 9i{ove you Tfie "Easy Way...
