September 1,1993 2 Campus Opinion Even though classes started last week, are you already getting behind in your assignments? Do you find it hard to schedule study time around your favorite soap opera or that party Thursday night? Do you wish time would stop for an hour so you can catch up? If you answered yes to any of these questions, I have the perfect solution for you. Join one (or more) of Meredith* s many clubs and orga nizations or run for a class office. Just get involved. You may be thinking, “All I need is one more thing to take up my time. I am busy enough as it is.” If you are not involved in some thing at Meredith, you are not busy. Everyone has time to attend a meet ing (hall meetings do not count), co chair a commiuee or write an article for the Meredith Herald. Look at the people who are involved. Do you think they are not taking 15-18 hours of class just like you? Believe it or not, being busy will make you more organized. If you know you have a quiz in Old English on Friday, and there is a MEA committee meeting Thursday Tracey Rawls Editor night, you will manage your time efficiently so you can get (almost) everything accomplished. Adding more responsibilities to the ones you already have may sound crazy. But believe me, it works. You will make more of your study time and have fim meeting new people. If you do not get involved, how do you expect to meet people? Sure you have ftiends on your hall and in your classes, but do they have the same interests you have? If you join a club, you are sure to meet people who are interested in the same things you are. If you do not take advantage of what Meredith has to offer, you will be missing out on the whole college experience. College is not just classes, hall meetings and parties. College is your stepping stone into the real world. We have all heard how Meredith is unique; and maybe someof you do not believe this. Think about it. Be ing at a school with 2,000 students ^fords you many more opportuni ties than a school with 20,000. You do not have to look hard at Meredith to find a place to get involved. There are so many clubs, organizations and class offices that everyone could be a part of at least one. Leadership skills are desirable in the job market. You can get these skills at Meredith. There is no need to feel intimidated about running for an office. We are all equals. At Meredith you will not feel the pressure to com pete with others, i.e. males. You can gain the leadership skills necessary to compete with males in the job market. I know I would not have applied to be editor of the newspaper at a school with 20,000.1 do not have that much confidence in myself. However, working on the paper at Meredith gives me the confidence I need to compete with others when I graduate. At the Activities Fair during Ori entation, I heard so many student leaders saying they had an excellent response fi'om the freshmen—many expressed an interest in joining a club or running for office. I espe cially hope the freshmen will take advantage of what Meredith has to offer, and I hope their enthusiasm will not wear off. Justtryit. Getinvolvedandseeif you don’t discover more advantages than disadvantages. You might be surprised, and you might sUll get to watch your fevorite soap every once in a while. / ' ^ I Merudiih Herald Fdilor in (lifer TnH'ey Kawls ' ^Ivotisuif -...Stacie Wafittos Vbasi&aair^.., Ktportm. >arah AiB.mJb Itedmical Advisor. ..„..J-iurat>sncn^' f^waltjF Advisor 1M&» l’4»iorirtl Tbe Mereililh lUnOd is poMtritad by Use Co1%e thrai.glK«t .
