Student report closes case
by Christina Peoples
Last April Heather
Norman, sophomore, was at
tacked while walking on the
road in front of the Ledford
Building. She was was not
injured, but a man grabbed
her and tf ied to stuff a sockin
her mouth. The student
screamed, and the man let
her go. Tlie attacker was de
scribed as dark-skinned and
six-feet tall. TTie student also
said the man had pantyhose
over his head.
The first week in May
another Meredith smdent re
ported that she saw a man
fitting the description of the
attacker on campus. She fol
lowed the man and was able
to give a description of the
man and his license plate
number to security. Security
gave the information to the
Raleigh Police Department,
The police located the
man and questioned him. He
confessed that he committed
the crime. On August 23, he
was sentenced to ten years in
prison. A week before his
trial, he was arrested for a
similar crime in Edgecombe
County.
Norman said, "I’m glad
he was arrested, but I'd pre
fer that he’d gotten some psy
chological counseling."
The resposible actions of
a few can save countless
hours of pain and suffering
for many. Being alert does
not mean being paranoid
about everything that hap
pens. When things in your
environment just do not seem
right, or if you notice some
one who is not usually a part
of the everyday "scenery,"
report your concerns to the
campus police department
immediately.
The Meredith Security
Department offers these tips
to students;
•Never attempt to appre
hend or question a suspect
yOurself.
•Never place yourself in
danger.
. -Get pertinent informa
tion - description of the per-'
son, vehicle description, li
cense plate number.
•Always call for help if
you feel threatened or scared.
• Always be alert
•Do not take for granted.
that everyone is on campus
for an education.
•If you feel you are in
immediate danger, call 911.
