September 8,1993 Campus Opinion by Traci Latia Every other week or so a brand new CD comes out in record stores at the whoi^ing price of $14.98 (some times even more). For most of the college student population, that kind of cash is hard to come by, and if we have even that nuich it usually goes for laundry, a good meal atTaco Bell and Hillsborough Street beer money (for the few of us who occasionally indulge to lower pur, cholesterol). So what a great number of us end up doing isheading down to SchooJkids, The Record Exchange or CD Superstore to pick up the CD a few weeks later when they sell the deoM CD as used for ches^. I used to think that this was a great deal. This past week record execu tives from RCA held a {»ess confer ence to discuss the sales of used CDs and decided that the RCA label wouki no longer allow iieir artists’ CDs to be sold as used. This decision holds raudi controversy since there are quite a few CD outlet stores that depend solely on the sale of used CDs.What these CD outlets are not taking into account is the number of artists who lose money when these outletsselltheirCDsfor$9.99(some-' times even cheaper). One artist who made ahuge stand against the sale of used CDs is coun try music star Garth Brooks; he has issued the decree that his CDs are not to be sold as used. At first I thought, “Why did it matter if his CDs were sold as used since he has more money than he knows what to do with?” When 1 heard him explain his posi tion on The Tonight Show last week, I understood why the sale of used CDs are not that great. Brooks pointed out that he is not the only one who gets the money off the sale of his CD. There are the songwriter, the musicians, back-up singers, production crew and the record label who each get a part of the sale. When a CD is sold as used they are not getting their fair share of Meredith Herald Vratty Kawls Layoirt Spons ftod Cunpus Activ^ Edia* ......JCate Stew«t i Aiwtismg Manner St«eie W«fltins i Photo Editor i^rauces Pate; Reporters Sonya Bwders ; Sarah MuSi^ i * Adilie Tscliamlcr ' AttuindArosier TWmical Alvissf. These people have families to clothe, feed and pro vide shelter for, and they have bills to pay as well. So when a huge corporation like RCA pulls out a major stop like they did this week, it wasn’t because of greed; it was for the protection of their artists. So the next time you are getting ready to buy a used CD, think about the number of people, besides the artist, who depend on the money that you are forking over. Welcome back Seniors!
