He invited former Presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and George Bush to help him pro mote a pact that has alienated him from other Democrats. • RejK'esentatives of Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organi zation overcame 30 years of bloody animosity Monday by signing a framework for peace on the White House South Lawn. The Declaration of Principles es tablishes Palestinian self-rule in the Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip and West Bank town of Jericho. • A British couple traveling near Tallahassee, Fla., was at tacked early Tuesday morning. The man was killed. The woman remains in critical condition, This is the ninth attack on foreignersin Florida since October. • Raymond Burr, the lawyer in the long-running Perry Mason series, died of cancer. Jurassic Park director Steven Speilburg came in second with $72 million. • Clemson’s Memorial Sta dium was chosen Monday as the first-year home for a proposed Charlotte NFL franchise. The school will receive roughly $3 million for rental of the 81,473- se^ stadium. • Belk Hudson Leggett will open a store at Northgate Mall in Durham. Next year the mall plans to add 175,299 square feet. When completed, the mall will cover about 627,000 square feet. • Pete Sampras defeated Cedric Pioline in the finals of the US Open, 6-4,6-4,6-3. by Christina Peoples Freshmen elections speeches were held in Jones Auditorium Monday. There was a fair amount of participa tion from the people running for of fice; however, the interest in student government on the part of the student body was not present. Perhaps attend ing the elections speeches should be a requirement so that people will be aware of issues before they vote. Ashley Cooper, Elections Board Chair, said, “There was a good voter turnout, but I was displeased with the number of freshmen who ran for of fice.” For the office of president five students gave enthusiastic speeches about change, involvement and unity. Kerrie Fitzgerald used her name to list her qualifications for office. She said she had knowledge, effort, responsi bility, reassurance, individual and en thusiasm to make this year count for the feshmen. “Stepinto success and vote forthe cool dame with the unique name,” was Kristye Koontz’s slogan. She and some friends entertained us with an Addams family rendition about her personality and dedication. Karen Jones talked of change in the form of change machines. Amber Beacham spoke of her leadership ability, dedication and abil ity to work with others while Collyn Evans roused the freshmen to show Meredith what needs to be done and how to do it in her vice presidential address. Making a big mark on Meredith with different ideas from the whole class was the subject of Adrian Harrold’s speech for VP. Amanda Austin and Vittoria Trojer ran for secretary.
