October 13,1993 _6 Campus News ALIS is a wonder for the library by Jennifer Munden TTie Meredith coiiununity cel ebrated the arrival 6f ALIS last Wednesday at ao official ‘Tea Party” in Carlyle Campbell Library. Faculty actors from the annual rendition of “Alice in Wonderland" were present as surprise guests, in cluding the King of Hearts, the Red Queen, the White Rabbit, the fairy on roller skates, and a flower. An esti mated 150 people were present at the tea party, said Librarian Janet Free man. ALIS, an acronym for Automated Library Information System, is acom- puter system that is replacing the card catalogs in the library. The system has many advantages, the most important of which is "avail ability,” said Freeman. TTiere are two terminals on both the top and bottom floOTS and six on the main floor. Its abilities also include access to pboto by Tara Youog Dean Dorothy Sizemore and Deao AUen Burris ei^oy the ALIS tea party festivities. Meredith’s music li brary can also be accessed through the terminals. A printer is hooked up to each terminal, so when you fmd what you need, you can print it. Thus, the tedious copying of index cards is eliminated. You can try out this new system and receive a free drink sipper any time this semester, or until supplies runout. "Tliis is a great addition to (hit library! It will make research a lot. easier," commented Jenny Walker, library assistant. New additions to ALIS are com ing soon, which include being able to checkout the source through the ALIS system. Also, if a student has a microcomputer and a modem, she can access ALIS from the library without having to leave her ownroom. Pi Mu Epsilon inducts new members for '93-'94 The Meredith chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, a national mathematics honor fraternity that recognizes math achievement at the college level, inducted ten new members recently. Dr. Charles Davis serves as the advisor for this group that received its charter in 1989. As part of the induction ceremony the new members recited a pledge, received a certificate and membership pin, and signed the Meredith chapter’s membership book. Inductees inchide; Msmdy Chitsaz, Lori Elliott, Scottie Eustis, Tonya Hoyd, Sherrie Lane, Marissa Malana, Ashley McCormick, Shannon Smith, Christina Steward, and Jan Yow.
