But this isn’t the beginning. Students began learning the ABC’s of teaching this semester with Block, a concentrated study in student teach ing where students get experience teaching to their peers. English major Frances Pate said that through Block she is taking a course on how to teach English and courses on pre-adolescent and adolescent behavior. Although student teaching and classroom observations are pass/feil, it isn’t a recess ftom the books. Accord ing to Pate, student teachers have the same responsibilities as a regular teacher would have. Student teachers are responsible for all lesson plans and giving grades in the classroom. Pate, who will be teaching elev enth grade at Athens Drive High Scool, said that Meredith students are placed in different schools where cooperat ing teachers are interested in tuving student teachers. During the time Meredith students teach the class, a supervisor ftom the education depart ment will come in at some point, to observe how well the student teachers are able to manage the classroom and how effectively they perform. If the student teacher is havii^ problems, the supervisor works with them to help them improve their teaching skills. Many students come back after they graduate to do the in-dass teaching segment of their study. However, stu dents that do this must have prevnusly graduated with most of their certifica tion work already completed. For ex ample, students planning to go into education must take a course in educa tional psychology and foudations of American education. In addition, there are six other ad ditional requirements for those plan ning to student teach. A student must have a summation of a 2.5 grade point average or above prior to student teach ing, a student must be involved in observation in the public schools and must demonstrate competencies con stituted by the Department of Educa tion showing teaching effeaiveness. Additionally, she must have satisfaao- rily completed all method courses, obtained a physical examination for public schools teachers and filed an application for student teaching with the Department of Education, accord ing to the Meredith Student Catalogue. Students preparing for the program await with anxious feelings. Pate said, “I will be able to see in the students what I’m learning in class, i’m excited about it!” Meredith falls for Fall Fest "94 by Teresa Latham This year's Fall Fest had more than just good bands. The music heard over the campus Sunday, September 25th drew students and others out of their rooms and outside for some fun and relaxation. Bands Doolitde from Ra leigh and Catfish Jenkins from Athens, Ga. provided great times for everyone to listen to. Due to the reconstniaion at the amphitheater, Fall Fest was relocated this year on the field area beside the lake. Everyone seemed to actually prefer the area because it allowed a lot more space to play Frisbee, walk the dog, or simply wander about and so cialize. “I like this years location be cause you are not just confined to the island and there is more room for other things than just the band,” said senior Erin Riley. New activities were provided to add to the festivities such as the Orbitron and the Moonjump. Every one seemed to enjoy these attractions. After jumping around on the Moonjump, senior Heather Marshbanks described her experience as'Verybouncy, butlotsoffim?' The Orbitron, which always had a line. gave students a chance to spin them seh^es any and every which way pos sible. Al^, lots of food was av^able including pretzels, candy apples, roasted peanuts, hcM dogs and more. " events. It has coordinated really well with Family Day and there has been a good turn out from students, parents and the community as well, ’ said Missy and Leigh. Remaining parents ftom photo by J6tson Children kept lining upf or the Moonjump, but the Meredith students had aleady claimed it for their own. I think that FaU Fest is much better with all of the new additions although I missed the cotton candy machiner said senior Crystal Howard. The MEA co-chairs of this event were seniors Missy Barakat and Leigh Btitler. ‘WeVetiiedakMofaewthings this year - activtties, location, and Family Day even seemed to enjoy all the activities.
