February 22,1995 8 Campus Extras Cast of My Fair Lady gives "loverly" performance The North Carolina Theatre pre sented a “loverly” performance of My Fair Latty at Raleigh Memorial Audito rium last week. Dana Lynn Caruso charmed the audience as the quirky Eliza DooUttle who enlists the help of Professor Henry Higgins (Kenneth Gamer) to teach her how to drop her cockney English dialect and speak correctly. Higgins makes a bet with Colonel Pickering (Richard Kinter) that he can transform her from a common, ill-man nered flower gill to a woman who could pass as a princess at the Embassy Ball in only six months. The contest begins and Eliza is taken through a rigorous training session to improve her speech and manners. This process is difficult but hilarious as Eliza whines her way into high society and steals the chauvinistic heart of Higgins. Gamer excels in the performance Clarky Lucas play review of the self-centered Higgins, who is every woman’s nightmare. Feminists cringeat “Hymn to Him” where Higgins passionately questions “Why can’t a woman be more like a man?” He is so arrogant and domineering that the au dience loves to hate him. Caruso steels hearts with each song she sings and gets the audience to root for Eliza as she masters her English and becomes a refined lady. You can’t help but giggle at Eliza’s brashness during the horse race where she hollers to the horse Dover to move its “bloomin’ ass, ” sending the other spec tators into shock. Higgins and Pickering are constantly on the edge of their •Cary YMCA-Youth counselor needed for Day Camp (after school, year-round school and pre-school programs). Full/Part time positions available. Catherine Rodgers, the assistant professor of Speech and Theatre, portrays Mrs. Eynsford Hill and is part of the En semble. The music is a definitely a high point of this show. All of the perform ers have incredible voices and sing with energy and enthusiasm. Many of the upbeat songs are well known like “With a Little Bit of Luck,” “I Could Have Danced All Night”and “GetMeto the Church. ” The North Carolina Sym phony provides the music flawlessly. The setting is excellent. The back drops of buildings and pubs in colors of dark blues and purples sets the stage for the dark streets of London that are inhabited by a poor and fiin loving lot. Higgins' house is elegant and warm, and we see most of Eliza’s progress in the study where there is a winding wood staircase, three phonographs, bookcases and a chaise lounge. The costumes are detailed and ex pressive of the time period. Women wear long dresses and hats, while the men wear suits and ascots. The most eye-catching costume is the dress Eliza wears to the Embassy ball. She seems to float around the room in the white sequined dress that has short sleeves, a high waist and long skirt. The cos tumes are modeled after the ones fea tured in movie version of My Fair Lady that stars Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. The three hour performance shown Feb. 14-19 definitely provided “the five most romantic evenings in town.” Jt's time for Ruth Week for Phis and fistroslU CaUndtu tf tvtHh- Ithunn it- Ittaith S. ffioHda^ Ukntar^ 27> hretido Lounge-?,00 Come find out ahout This and fistros and about fhe week's aefioiiiesl fifiendanee it mandaforg at this meeting to joint Causal dress.
