May 02,1995 Campus News 5 Click into lifestyle of Herald photo editor by Christina Peoples She is blond; she’s sassy, and she takes damn good pictures! Wlio is the freckled face behind the camera and the cigarette? I could not be talking about anyone else but Jetson, the Herald's beloved and soon-to-be graduating photogra phy editor (sniff!). Yes, she will stop accosting people for the Opinion Polls. First things first, I am going to go on the record and tell all of the campus that does not know that Jetson actually has a first name. 1 know you’re shocked...please, catch your breath. She’ll probably kill me for revealing this, but her name is really Jennifer G jestson. That’s right ladies and gentle men; she not only has a pretty com mon first name but also has a wacky, Swedish last one. Don’t think that Jetson has dropped her Norwegian heritage. She merely shortened a last name that no one coxjld spell, and dropped a first name that was pretty ordinary for an extraor dinary individual. (Plus, when you’re in the biz where you need people to remember your name and your work for a long time, Jetson is a lot easier to remember than Jennifer.) Speaking of her heritage, Jetson proudly boasts of all the Olie’s and theme song to 71be/e/so«s under their breath as they passed her by, and yes, she has been asked if her dog’s name is Astro, but it doesn’t phase her a bit. Sphen’s drinking beer in the branches of her family tree. Her immediate fam ily consists of a wonderful mom and dad (1 know; I’ve met them!), who also were graciously given simple first names to balance the weight of carry ing a mondo last name—Tom andjudy. No wise cracks please...Yes, Jetson has heard the giggles when she men tions her mom’s name—Judy Jetson; yes, she’s heard people humming the (She’s been fine ever since her iden tity therapy. Ha! Ha!) I have now smoothly transitioned to the next most important person in Jetson’s life (besides me of course!)— her dog, Thor. Thor is a Golden Re triever, named for a strong mythical god of thunder and light. It is easy to see Thor’s resemblance to light with his bright, shiny coat and his even sunnier disposition. Herald copy-editor is a die-hard journalist by Clarky Lucas When it comes to news, Melissa Massengill can really dish it out. Not only is she the sports _____ editor for the Gamer News, she is also copy editor for the Herald. She manages to take time out from smoking at the entrance of the Cate Center on Tuesday nights to criticize the stories that will be fea tured in the paper. Criticizing is something Melissa does with great enthusiasm. She relishes marking up stories and pointing out the mistakes to other staff members. When she is in the office, Melissa is constantly bending over her pencil with her eyes in a fro zen squint on the story she is fervently editing. Occasion ally she hollers out “What the hell is this! Who wrote this? How am 1 sup posed to know what this means?” Of ten her fiancee Greg appears in tlie doorway of the publications office. He seems to be as scared of her as the rest of the Herald staff Her brash attitude is wliat sets her apart. If there is a controversy brewing on campus or at tile Cantina, she is the first one to volunteer to write about it. Melissa never backs down from anything or anyone. News excites her. Joxirnalism is in her blood. One of her most impor tant contributions to the Herald staff is maturity. Being one of two seniors on staff, Melissa knows how to handle any situation. She is always calm and collected when others are pulling their hair out. Melissa is immune to stress. In class, she is always the first person to ask a question and the first to know the answer to anything that is asked. Her easiest course this semester was her senior the sis. Melissa wouldn’t mind writing another paper as long as she could keep Dr. Gilbert for an advisor. As Melissa prepares to graduate and head out into the big wild world, many people ask her if she is ready for a career in journalism. 'The Herald staff keeps asking themselves if journalism is ready for Melissa. However, Thor’s resemblance to thunder isalittle moredifficultto see— he’s a little overweight from being a latch-key dog with a really busy mom. He spends his dtiys watching the Car toon Network (yes, Jetson leaves the T.V. on to keep him company while she’s gone) and his nights snuggling and giving comfort to his loving parent. Jetson is surrounded with fnends of all shapes, personalities, and degrees of sanity. She especially enjoys spending time with a certain unique Brit and her wacky and witty little sister, Melissa. Jetson and 1 are Cup A Joe regulars (never de-caffers). She can consume three iced-double-skinny-mocha lattes and never bat an eye (and she doesn’t want to bat an eye because she is usu ally trying to put herself in a caffeine coma to get all her work done). Jetson always does get the job done Oike Windexand Bounty paper towels). She has also served as the yearbook’s photo editor this year and has still maintained hersanity through tliedemandsofboth jobs. I am amazed at how much Jetson really thinks...no, don’t laugh. 1 mean people sometimes rash into things and go about life haphazardly, but Jetson always keeps a cool head, a sharp eye, and a strong sense of who she is and where she wants to go. Jetson has a j>hilosophy about any topic she feels moved to write about (just ask her religion professor). She keeps a journal of poetry, songs, ideas, and lists of things she wants to do. Her poetry will move you to tears; her thoughts about the state of the world and women will have you rolling on the floor and howling with laughter, and her honest and thoughtful questions will keep you wondering and wanting to know more. Although .she has a strange obses sion with Windexing her entire apart ment and yanking her split ends when she’s stre.ssed, Jet.son keeps herself and her on-the-edge friends like me laugh ing and loving life through reels of old T.V. shows(especially/)/c;fe VanDyke), cartoons after cartoons (favorites be- see JETSON page twelve
