August 30,1995 4 Campus Sports Soccer team kicks off third season By; Kimberly Zucker Tlje Meredith Soccer team is kicking off their third season with a scrimmage game at Meredith on August 29th. The team is coached by Jose Cornejo, and he is thrilled about the up coming year. He expects this season to be the team’s best yet. This year’s team consists of 21 players, and there are 1 1 players on the field at a time. Positions on the field include forwards, sweepers. stoppers, mid-fielders, and fullbacks. There are two halves lasting forty minutes each. Of the 21 members on the soccer team, 12 of these girls are new members. Kelly Pergerson and Scottie Eustis are the senior co captions. Both players are excited and ready to lead the team. “I get a great fulfillment in playing soccer because of the relationships I make with the other girls and the challenge of being a team leader,” Pergerson said. The regular soccer schedule starts with a home game on Septem ber 5th against Mt. Olive College. Coach Cornejo said, “This soccer year the future looks bright, and I hope the Meredith students come out to support the girls.” He feels school support boosts the girls’ spirit and lets the team know what a good job they are doing. Fans can be there on August 29th and Sep tember 5th when the team gets the ball roll ing! Tennis team shows great potential for fall season By: Ginny Bonkemeyer The 1995 tennis team has great potential as they enter the fall sea son. Led by coach Melinda Campbell, the team is expected to be fairly strong in the re gion. Tryouts are complete, and the tennis team is preparing for the fall season. “I’m looking forward to working with the team, and I’m ex cited about the possibili ties,” says Coach Campbell. The team boasts return ing senior Nikki Garner and juniors Kristy Harris and Brooke Ramos. They stand strong with the returning group of expe rienced sophomores : Mia Ahn, Alison Drake, Sarah Huffman, Dorothy Livesay, and Holly Tharpe. “A talented group of freshmen will make an impact on the program,” says Coach Campbell. The freshmen team members include Dana Flotkoetter, Ann Mebane, Anna Taylor, Natalie Thompson, and Elaine. All students are encour aged to come out to watch this talented team. The first home match will be against Louisburg College on September 6. GOING FOR THE GOAL: Meredith soccer team begins practice for the upcoming season.
