Editorial: Accessibility for all by Shadota’ Hargett I read a long time ago that we, as Americans, were created as equals under the law. And under that law we shall not be discriminated against, regardless of race, religion, creed, origin or handicap. Does that sound like something you’ve heard before? Of course it does, but what does it mean? Abso lutely Nothing! Now that I have gotten your attention, I feel the need to talk about a very important issue that is not taken seri ously on campus, and that is wheelchair accessibility to ALL buildings at Meredith. It seems to me that this college has been less than com pletely committed to assist ing disabled students. It is time for a change, don’t you think? As a disabled student, I know Convocation: Continued from page one Although convocation is no longer a requirement for freshman, Elizabeth Lester, like many entered Jones out of curiosity. Lester said that at first she had “no idea what [convocation] was about’’ but after the “inter esting” show she saw on Monday she won’t mind returning in the future. Dr. Cindy Edwards, chair of the convocation committee, said she was very happy that the first convocation was a success and she is excited about helping students prepare to be “citizen[sj of the 21st century.” Before becoming chairperson, Edwards served as a commit tee member for two years. She has much enthusiasm concerning the upcoming convocation programs which include Lori Molnar’s lecture entitled “Aging—A women’s issue” (Sept. 18) and a special appearance on Oct. 9 by Dr. Mark Plotkin, Ethnobotanist. all too well how difficult it is to get in and out of build ings on campus. Now some of you out there are saying, “What is she beefin' about, we have ramps. If Meredith is that bad why did she come?” or my personal fave, “Why doesn’t she stop com plaining and do something about it.” Those are brilliant questions, in which case I would like to answer. What am I beefin’ about you ask: the lack of attention given to making Meredith more accessible to wheel chairs. Yes, there are some sufficient ramps on campus but they are still not enough. Some of the ramps, like at Hunter and Jones, are dangerous because they’re too steep. It becomes quite hard to maneuver a wheel chair in that situation. As far as Meredith being a bad school, it is not, but it needs to become more aware of the problems that we face. It is an institution that 1 love, but it has failed me and others by not properly seeing to our needs. See Editorial Page 6 Spring Break Plons?
