“Miss Ida”, as she was
commonly known, designed
our school seal in 1909 and
the Meredith plate bears
her signature. She was still
working at Meredith on her
80th birthday, and she died
the following year in 1940.
Mary Tillery was a student/
co-worker of the late Miss
Poteat. To honor her men
tor, Tillery painted her
portrait. This portrait was
later donated to the school
by the Alumnae Association
and hung in the first floor
parlor of Poteat Hall. Today
the faceless portrait is
located in the security
office.
School administrators took
immediate action. Dean
Cannon, Dr. Jean Jackson
and Paula O’Briant were
concerned for the safety of
the five or six students still
living in Poteat Hall. They
decided that all guests,
including parents, would be
denied access to the dormi
tory until the orientation
crew arrived on August
14th.
Measures were taken by
security to implement the
administration’s rule. Al
though the residents of
Poteat Hall complained, the
ban on guests remained.
No one is currently being
held responsible for the
vandalism and destruction
of the portrait.
There was not enough
evidence to openly accuse
any person or group. How
ever, it is believed by a few
residents who were living
in Poteat this summer that a
Meredith student was
partly, if not totally, re
sponsible for the vandalism.
A month has passed, and
the incident has been for
gotten. Everytime suspects
are allowed to strip away
parts of our campus, a piece
of our Honor Code has been
stripped away also.
If you have any informa
tion regarding this matter,
please contact Paula
O’Briant, Dean Cannon, or
Dr. Jean Jackson.

"We spent lots of time look
ing at Automated Placement
Management systems, and
we chose Resume Expert
because it provides the very
best service for our stu
dents,” said Rebecca
Highsmith, assistant director
of the Career Center.
It is the most sophisticated
system, but it is also user
friendly.
Meredith College could be
considered a pioneer in
using the system, because
the only other college in
North Carolina that is using
it is UNC Charlotte, said
Highsmith.
All information from the
Resume Expert Systems is
customized for Meredith.
Each senior will receive a
disk and an instructional
booklet which will be given
out at Career Center Orienta
tion.

dents will be to register on
the disk, which includes
typing facts such as the
students’ majors and minors,
GPA and occupational inter
ests.
Then the students will be
able to type in their re
sumes.
They can change informa
tion on it anytime.
riic Career Center will do
the rest by matching up
names of employers located
in a separate data base to
students interested in that
certain occupational field.
After the resumes are sent
to the potential employers,
the employers will contact
the students they are inter
ested in.
