August 30,1995 8 Campus Extras Macaroni Grill is fun dining with an Italian flair Take one step into Durham’s Macaroni Grill and suddenly you’ve left the traffic of 1-40 and 15-501 far behind and entered an Italian piazza complete with cobblestone walls and stone floors. Strings of lights float above your head while opera singers stroll among tables. Fruits and vegetables spiU out of wooden crates stacked along the walls of an open kitchen. The restaurant is full of energy and excitement—the perfect place for a special occasion. In fact, when I dined at Maca roni Grill last Thursday with a group of friends, it was to celebrate a birthday. The restaurant does not take Restaurant Review Paige Layno reservations; however, the open atmosphere creates a festive mood, so it’s hard to be impatient during the 30-45 minute wait. There’s seating outside, as well as an indoor bar. The more ambitious soul could brush up on her Itahan while she waits for a table— the restrooms pipe Italian conversation over loudspeak ers! Once we were seated, the service was great; overall, the food was too. The tables are covered with paper, and SGA Comer Need a number? We started with bowls of portabella mush room soup seasoned with pesto for $1.95 and Caesar salads for a mere 75 cents. Both were excellent. Fresh, warm bread, seasoned with rosemary and garlic, was served with “Italian butter” (olive oil sprinkled with parmesan cheese and fresh groimd pepper). Next came the antipasto. We chose shrimp with garlic butter over pasta for $4.95 and grilled portabella mush rooms served with caramel ized onions over polenta for $6.95. Both were mouth watering, but a fight ensued over who would get the last mushroom! Dinner received mixed re views. 1 had the scaloppini di polio—chicken with lemon butter, mushrooms, arti chokes and pancetta served over pasta for $10.95. It sounded much better than it actually was. The artichokes were hard, and the pasta was swimming in oil. The pesto fettuccine for $8.95 was good, but it could have been a little more exciting with some fresh vegetables or perhaps some seafood. The winners at the table were the rotisserie Cornish game hen for $9.95 and the pizza con legumi for $6.95. The Cornish hen was served with roasted garlic, spinach and orzo. The pizza was topped with homemade tomato sauce, veggies, fresh bash, and low-fat mozzarella and then baked in a wood burn ing oven. Dinner entrees ranged between $5.95 and $13.95, so there’s something for everyone. There were also a few veg etarian specials. There was table-side opera which added a great touch. Requests are happily taken if the singer knows your favor ite opera, or he or she will offer suggestions. We requested a piece from La Traviata and enjoyed it so much we asked for an encore from La Boheme . Monique, a soprano, even gave us a summary of each opera before she sang. (Good news for you non-opera lovers: I heard Monique belting out an Aretha Franklin tune later that evening!) Unfortunately, we didn’t save room for dessert. We did end our evening with cappuccinos all around, and Monique stopped by again with an Italian version of “Happy Birthday” and a complimentary tiramisu for the birthday girl. In May, another Macaroni Grill will open on Walnut Street in Cary; until then, you’ll have to make the trek to Durham. Macaroni Grill is located on 15-501-south just across from South Square Mall, but the atmosphere alone makes it worth the drive. So next time you’re in the “aria, ” be sure to check it out!
