September 13,1995 Campus Travel 5 Meredith Abroad: The opportunity of a lifetime by Beth Morris Have you ever thought about traveling to exotic places? Do you need to go to summer school, but you’ve grown tired of Raleigh? If you answered “yes” to one or both of these questions, then you should consider Meredith Abroad. Every year Dr. Betty Webb, Profes sor of English and Director of International Studies, coordinates a summer study abroad for Meredith students. The program lasts approximately eight weeks. Stu dents are able to earn up to 11 hours credit and have fun at the same time. This past May 17 angels packed their bags and boarded a plane at RDU anticipating a summer of delight. This year's destinations were Italy and England. Tlie trip was broken into two segments. During the first four weeks students bunked in Borgo Sansepolcro which is located in the Tuscany area of Italy. This was the first year that Meredith Abroad students traveled in Italy. (Although they didn’t know quite what to expect, in the end most Spring Break Plans? Earn $2500 & Free Spring Break Trips! Sdi 8 trips ond go free! Best trips and prices! Classes were held primarily in the mornings as to free afternoon and weekend travel. During week end excursions many traveled to Switzerland, Austria, Germany and France. During the second part of the trip students stayed in the Maria Assumpta Centre—a convent located in the heart of London at Kensington Square. As soon as the “tube” (the Italian subway) was mastered, going to the theater, museums, restaurants, pubs and parks became easy. The last week of the summer adventure was spent traveling around Northern England. Time for a quick excursion to Edinburgh, Scotland was squeezed into the last week of fun. When it was time to return, tears of happiness and sadness streamed down the cheeks of many. Parents, siblings and boyfriends eagerly awaited the world travelers as they hurried through customs. The summer abroad will never be forgotten. If you are interested in traveling abroad and creating a lifetime of memories contact Dr. Webb immedi ately at 829-8397.
