September 13,1995 Campus Extras 7 Senate begins legislative year by Betsy Stewart The Meredith College Senate began the 1995-96 legislative year with an orientation and get-acquainted meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 5 in the Chapel Reading Room. The purpose of the meeting, according to Senate Chair Erica Balmer, was to give Senators their notebooks, discuss the role of the Senate in the Student Government Association (SGA) and set goals for the upcoming year. As stated in the SGA constitution, the role of the Senate is to recom mend changes in the constitution and regulations of SGA, review the constitutions of existing and proposed student organizations and approve or reject any regulation changes proposed by the Student Life Committee, the SGA Executive Committee, or any Meredith student. One issue the Senate intends to tackle this year is the male visitation policy. After freshman class elections are held this week, the Senate will number 19; this number includes 15 voting members, two non-voting members, a faculty representative and an adviser from Student Activi ties. Each class eleas three Senators, the Meredith Commuter Association is represented by two Senators, and the re-entry students elect one Senator. Non-voting members are secretary Carol Swink, faculty representative Dear Girlfriend, Suppose you sow a couple of anatomically correct young bodies "gettin' it on" in a way too compact car in a Meredith parking lot. What would you do, Girlfriend? Dear Innocent Observer, Those heavenly bodies need to find somewhere else to shine. There are several approaches that could be taken. The wisest and definitely most boring action is to call security. However, one idea that comes to my mind is to grab a bag of popcorn, a large soda and let the two hormones see that you are about to enjoy the show with a Coke and a smile. Girlfriend! What would you do if you saw your man kissing on another girl in the parking lot, at YOUR school? Honey, if it were me there would be a hurricane with both of their names swirling on it! But, since we are Meredith Angels, that wouldn't be lady-like would it? Yeah, right! Girl, the best advice I could give to you is in three words; move on sister, move on! Believe me, there are plenty of NEW fish in the sea just waiting for you to reel them in! Dear Girlfriend is a new question and answer column In order to submit your questions to Dear Girlfriend, drop them in the Herald box under Student Activities window. Dr. Alan Ammann and adviser Shelly Hoover. The chairwoman votes only in the event of a tie. The Senate meets at 5:15 p.m. in 214 Harris on the first and third Tuesday of each month, and meetings are open to anyone who wishes to attend. “It’s going to be a fun but chal lenging year," Balmer said, “and it will require student participation. We encourage student suppon, so please don’t hesitate to contaa your Senators or me if you have any concerns or suggestions. The most important goal for Senate this year is to improve communica tion between the Senate and the student body.” Nooe; You know you are at Meredith if... by Barbara Watts ...reciting Chaucer becomes a way of life; ...the term, “angel,” is not necessarily used to describe a spiritual being; ...additional parking really means less convenient parking available for students; ...women rule! (except, of course, for the male-dominated Administration and Board of Trustees). ...you hear Chaucer's name used in vain. ...you climb out of bed and go outside at 2 am for a pretend fire once a month. ...you begin to consider burlap wallpaper for you dream home. Continued from page 1 She served for District B until 1993 and then became a member at large. Nooe also spoke about her college days at Meredith by telling about the”tremendous support” she received from the faculty, staff and students. “In order for the Meredith to do well, the city must do well, “said Nooe.
