September 20,1995 4 Campus News Meet your "User-friendly" SGA leaders by: Robin Hollingsworth Meredith has a long tradition of student government. Now in its ninth decade of service to the student body, the SGA continues to dedicate itself to the high standards it established in 1905. The execu tive committee is comprised of the SGA officers and presidents of various organizations. Together they hope to represent the differ ent views of the student body. June Holland, a senior biology major, serves as SGA president. June is looking forward to a year of building unity and increasing communication between the SGA and students. She encourages everyone to feel free to come by SGA meetings to vocalize any concerns and reminds us that otherwise the SGA may not be aware of the issue. June, a Holly Springs native, is also actively involved in Alpha Lambda Delta, Beta Beta Beta, and Kappa Nu Sigma. She loves the peaceful atmosphere, scenery, and friendly faces here at Meredith. Our SGA vice-president. Erica Balmer, is a junior biology major from Prince George, Virginia. She stays busy as a Senate Chair, member of Alpha Lambda Delta, and the 1st Baptist Church college group. Erica is hopeful to see progress made in the area of male visitation. She requests that students participate in and heartily support student activities. Erica is anticipat ing a great year full of new opportu nities and challenges. Danielle Taylor is excited to be SGA secretary. A junior child develop ment and elementary ed. major, Danielle’s parents live in Alaska. She is actively involved as president of the Latter Day Saint Student Associa tion and as president of the Inter faith Council. Danielle’s aim is to increase communication between students and faculty and she prom ises to take care of any concerns you may put in her hands. Her love of Meredith stems from the network of tradition and sisterhood. Sophomore Melissa Ray is SGA treasurer, as well as president of Alpha Lambda Delta, treasurer of College Democrats, and a member of the History/Politics club. An Ameri can Civ./Politics major from Zebulan, she hopes to increase campus awareness of the SGA. Melissa is open to suggestions and asserts that your concerns are likewise those of the SGA. She challenges everyone to the tune of an ancient proverb “Be not afraid of going slowly, be only afraid of standing stiU”. Melissa most loves the “Spaces Available for Fall Leadership Conference” Each year the Office of Student Activities and Leadership Development offers a Fall Leadership Conference. The main objective is to provide organizations and their members with great ideas and helpful informa tion to use throughout the year. It is also an opportunity for students to gain leadership skills. This year the conference is opening extra spaces for any Meredith student who would be interested in attending. Please take advantage of this wonderful opponunity. You will meet other Meredith students, interact with speakers and leave with insightful information. The day will include a keynote speaker, an alumnae panel, break-out sessions on assertiveness and business etiquette, and a general session on the Social Change Model for Leadership Development. The conference is centered around the theme “Leaders Under Construaion: Blueprints for Change.” The number of spaces available is limited and will be filled on a first- come, first-serve basis. If you are interested in attending the conference, please call the Office of Student Activities and Leadership Development at x8333. TAKING ACTION: Student leaders represent the Student Body at various funaions throughout the year. If you have any concerns or issues that you would like to see discussed look for these feces on campus. faculty here at Meredith for their helping hands and generous support. The SGA member-at-large is Amanda McCullen, a prospective biology major. Amanda hails from Goldsboro and as a freshman is already serving the SGA and yearbook staffs. She is exhilarated about the opponunity to make a difference through the SGA. Already she loves the friendly faces of the Meredith campus and requests anyone to call her who wishes to voice their concerns. Ashley Peay from Clinton serves as Elections Board Chair in addition to Herald Layout Editor and vice- president of the Colten English club and a member of Phis. She hopes to see the SGA pull together and for each branch to represent Meredith’s voice to the best of its ability. Ashley advocates that everyone become as involved as possible, and instead of waiting for change, to go to the SGA with your suggestions and make them happen! The special family bond we create is what Ashley loves best about MC. Carmen Prevette, a senior account ing major from Salisbury, is RHB chair. She is enthusiastic about the variety of opportunities available for the Meredith community. She participates in the Accounting Association, Tomorrow’s Business Women, and the Programming and Service boards. This year she is dedicated to encouraging more students to take advantage of on- campus activities. Carmen recom mends that all students get involved in MC events and make the most of their college years. Student Life Chair is senior Amy Harper. Amy also takes part in the Junior Woman’s club. Tomorrow’s Business Women, and is an Account ing/Business major from Durham. She is eagerly anticipating the Oct. 5th student forum “Free Your Mind” held at 7 in the chapel. She hopes all of you will attend to address your issues to the SGA. Her favorite aspects of the Meredith experience are the people and traditions. See Leaders Page 6
