October 4,1995 8 Campus Extras Last of the Dogmen has something for everyone If you want a movie with action, mystery, comedy and romance, only one current film offers all four: Tab Murphy’s Last of the Dogmen. The story begins with the search for three missing convicts by bounty hunter Lewis Gates (Tom Berenger) in the Montana Rocky Mountains isolated Oxbow region. Gates, along with his dog Zip, finds the remains of the men beside a bloody Indian arrow. The possibility of others living in this area makes Gates suspicious, so he takes the arrow to Dr. Lillian Sloan (Barbara Hershey), an anthropologist specializ ing in Native American studies. Sloan laughs off Gates’ suggestion of Indian tribes living in the Oxbow. She does, however, identify the arrow as belong ing to a group of Cheyenne Indians called Dogmen. Sloan believes that the arrow is simply a cheap reproduction. After Gates presents Sloan a 1930’s newspaper article about a wild boy found in the Oxbow region, she is Movie Review By Cindy Thornton persuaded to go there with him to determine if any Dogmen still live there. They are captured by some Dogmen warriors, led by Yellow Wolf, the next man in line to be chief. Luckily, Sloan knows enough of the Cheyenne lan guage to convince the Dogmen that she and Gates are harmless. From this point on, the real adventure begins; Gates and Sloan become the “guests” of the Dogmen. The ending is surprising, heart- wrenching and worthwhile. Gates re alizes what life really means to him, and he finally begins to care for others besides himself Here we discover a wonderful romance between two people who superficially seem to be worlds apart (be sure to bring lots of Kleenex). Berenger is a huge contributor to the movie’s success. Because of his reserved attitude and rugged dress, he is a very convincing mountain man. In fact, he looked like he had just stepped off the cover of an LL. Bean catalogue. Hershey is a wonderful choice as well. With her deep-set eyes and wonderful voice, she easily looks to be the intel lectual that she portrays. And Zip the dog brings lots of laughs with his tricks and whines. The costume design is remarkable. From the convincingly rugged look of Gates to the mysterious/powerful ap pearance of the Dogmen, designer Zamperelli provides the viewers with a really accurate picture. The scenery is remarkable as well. The beauty and majesty of the Rocky Mountains made me long to be there. Another huge asset of the movie is its soundtrack. The dramatic pieces (comparable to those in Last of the Mohicans) can stir up anyone. The only negative criticism that I have is the portrayal of the Cheyenne Dogmen. From the first glance they are portrayed as warlike and formidable. But luckily, a few good aspects of them are later shown. Last of the Dogmen is the best movie I’ve seen in over a year. The story suits all tastes and audiences, the actors and costumes are wonderfully chosen and the setting is simply breath taking. Both genders will appreciate this movie, so feel free to take anyone. This is one film that shouldn’t be missed. For me, once is not enough; I’m going to see it again. Last of the Dogmen is now playing at Mission Valley and Imperial Cin emas.
