October 25,1995 4 Campus News MIA brings diversity to campus By Shannon Batts Meredith International Association is an organization established for both International and American students interested in cross-cultural issues. MIA shares knowledge of different cultures within the Meredith community and provides support and guidance to the international community at Meredith. Some of the students involved in the organization are from Armenia, Bangladesh, Belgium, Burma, Brazil, China, England, France, Guyana, India, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Morocco, Taiwan, Venezuela, and Vietnam. MIA Week will be October 23-29. When I arrived at the meeting, I was greeted by a very friendly group of women. After spending time with some of the members of MIA, I will consider last Friday to be one of my most memorable times at Meredith College. Most of the meeting was spent discussing plans for MIA Week, but there was never a dull moment. I had tlie pleasure of seeing a Moroccan dance performed and learned a few steps from a Japanese dance (the students teaching the Japanese dance performed October 7, at an international festival held at the Civic Center) all within 50 minutes. I was so excited by the camaraderie and enchanted by the diversity that I have decided to join MIA and its international dance “troop” that will perform during the International exhibition in Belk Dining Hall. I encourage everyone to get involved during MIA Week. It will be a fun week to try new things and experience new cultures. There are women at Meredith from different cultures, ethnic backgrounds, social classes and experiences. We should take advantage of the short time we all have together, and learn as much as possible from each other. So please come join MIA during the week of October 23rd. ACTIVITIES; MON. Although I won’t miss the traffic. I’ll miss the fun (not to mention the elephant ears). This year’s fair had a lot of the old favorites, but it also had some new attractions. There were plenty of animals to see: cows, pigs, horses, chicken, ducks, sheep, and one of North Carolina’s newer arrivals, the emu, the ostrich’s Australian cousin. And for the adventurous, there was even a stand selling emu burgers. Mmm. Many radio and television stations had stands where they gave away free items and where t-shirts could be purchased. For instance, if you too heard that annoying “click,” it was probably the “Click it or Ticket” clickers given away by the NC Highway Patrol. The people running the games tried to lure me with “Hey, I gotta ask you something. ” I don’t know what they wanted to ask because 1 ignored them. After seeing the fair games special on “20/20,” I figured they might be con-artists. But the games I did play were fair. I came home with a few goldfish, and my sister won a poster of that Philly Flyers phenom, Eric Lindros. (She had to hit eight balloons, and she did it in 12 tries.) What would a review of the fair be like without talking about food? There was food galore at the fair. Everything you could imagine was there; pizza, BBQ, steak, sausage, burgers, ice cream, candy apples, cotton candy, peanuts, candy, french fries, funnel cakes, fresh lemonade, and, like I said, everything. I also checked out the G105 car. The two people in there, Lillian and Wendy, looked tired and dirty. But what can you expect from sitting in a car for days? And after talking to DJ Dino, I walked right into a plastic string and hurt my nose. Talk about embarrassing moments. Guess what else I saw at the fair? I saw that two Meredith women won honorable mentions for their photography: Julie Marchetti and Lynn Parrish. Many stars were at the fair also. Two of the many headliners were Crystal Gayle and Eddie Rabbit. Oh, yeah. I also saw Jim Carrey at the fair. Well, that is if you count Ace Ventura at the wax museum.
