Last call: Students
wake up to alcohol
awareness
Student Activities, along with the
Prograihming Board and the Counsel
ing Center, sponsored a “sobering”
look at alcohol awareness last week.
Most of us know about the fun effects
of alcohol; last week’s activities were
designed to remind students of some
of the dangers excess alcohol and poor
judgment can create.
The Counseling Center started
things out on Monday by handing out
red ribbons for students and faculty to
display on their cars. Students learned
how to serve festive drinks without
the worry of underage drinking or
drunk drivers when SGA served
“mocktails,” pina coladas and daiqui
ris sans alcohol, during dinner Mon
day night.
Videos designed to foster respon
sible attitudes toward alcohol were
shown in the lobby of Cate Center on
Tuesday. Titles included “Drinking and
Thinking” and “Female Alcoholism.”
Students were able to pick up lit
erature on the effects of alcoholism
and chemical dependency on Wednes
day. Tliese fliers contained informa
tion about how excess alcohol de
stroys vital organs, as weU as the dev
astating efforts alcoholism has on chil
dren, friends, and partners.
On Thursday lists of local cab
companies were posted in Belk Din
ing Hall and in Cate Center. Lastweek’s
drunken spree across the Governor’s
Mansion lawn was further proof that
alcohol and driving don’t mix. A $10
cab ride home is much less expensive
than a trip to the hospital or a human
life.
The Counseling Center wrapped
things up on Friday by calling for
student posters promoting respon
sible drinking and/or alcohol aware
ness. Mary Moore took top honors, as
well as $50, for her “Russian Rou
lette” poster, and Tara Flanagan fin
ished second, winning $25. The post
ers are on display in the Cate Center
lobby.
• USA Today is ItKiking; for 60 full-time student.s to be named
to its All-USA Academic team. Students will be featured in a
two-page color insert in the newspaper, and the top 20 will
receive cash prizes as well* The deadline for nominations is
Nov. 17* Nominations are to come from faculty members*
They are looking for smdents who excel not only in scholar
ship but in leadership roles on and off campus* Students will
be judged on an outstanding original academic or intellectual
product. Students need recommendations from the nominat
ing professor. Nomination forms and a contact number is
located in the Honors office,
* The National Conference on Undergraduate Research
CNCOR) is promoting undergraduate research, scholarship
and creative activity by sponsoring an undei^aduatc re
search conference on April 18-20 in Asheville NC The dead
lines for abstracts is Dec* 10,1995, Open for students in a
wide vartety of disciplines.

"We’re having more articles in the
Herald,” Martin said. “We’re also writ
ing to faculty and telling them to send
their students to seminars that apply
to their department and give extra
credit to the students who attend.”
Martin wanted students to know
that the seminars are “ informal, lunch
time things.” “Students can and are
encouraged to bring their lunches,”
she said.
Martin also urged students to re
quest extra credit from their profes
sors for attending these seminars.
Even if turnout does not grow, she
will still conduct the seminars next
year.
