Personality Profile:
June Holland
By Betsy Stewart
June Holland stands tall as the presi
dent of the Meredith Student Govern
ment Association. The 21-year-old se
nior is thoughtful, articulate and seri
ous-serious about her goals for SGA
and her goals for life after college.
Holland is carrying a major in biol
ogy with a minor in physical fitness,
and her dream is to be a physical
therapist. She has spent the last three
summers volunteering in some aspect
of the health field. During the sum
mer of 1995 she worked as student
manager of the
Meredith fitness
center and did two
internships: one in
physical therapy at
Cary Sports
Therapy and one
in cardiac rehabili
tation at
Healthworks, a di
vision of Wake
Medical Center. In
the summer of
1994 she was a re
habilitation aide at
Wake Medical
Center. “My sum
mers are physical
therapy,' she
laughed.
Thus far her
senior year has
been a busy one, Holland said. She is
working on her grad school applica
tions, trying to maintain her GPA, and
devoting a lot of time to SGA affairs. “I
don’t have much of a social life this
year,” she said, “I’m trying to concen
trate on academics.” She said she has
learned how to say no when there’s a
party being planned. She worried
about sounding “like a totally boring
person,” but agreed that she, like most
of her fellow seniors, is focused this
year on the next step in life. “I’m
walking the straight and narrow this
year,” she smiled, “there will be no
wild and crazy stories about me.”
When she was a senior at Fuquay-
Varina High, Holland had no intention
of attending Meredith. She applied to
and was accepted by Appalachian
State, Campbell and UNC-CH. The
application to Meredith was submit
ted only to please her paternal grand
mother, who years ago dropped out in
the middle of her first semester to
marry June’s grandfather.
“No way was I going to a girls’
school,” shesaid. “I visited Meredith to
make my grandma happy and fell in
love.” Holland thought she would stay
at Meredith two years and then trans
fer to a larger school. “Then,” she said,
“1 found out this was a women’s col
lege, not a girls’
school, loved it and
decided to stay.
Coming to
Meredith was the
right decision,”
she continued.
“Only one other
person from my
high school class
enrolled at
Meredith, so it was
like starting all over
again. Hiked that a
lot. It was like a
new beginning.”
Holland has
been involved in
campus activities
during her entire
college career. She
knew she wanted
to be SGA presi
dent some day after hearing then-presi
dent Jennifer Hartig speak at freshman
orientation. She ran for ireshman class
president, but lost because, she said,
she didn’t do a good job of campaign
ing. Then the SGA secretary resigned
and Holland volunteered for the job.
In her sophomore year, Holland
was a resident assistant, class marshall
and president of Alpha Lambda Delta,
the freshman honor society. As a jun
ior she served as senate chair, junior
adviser to Alpha Lambda Delta and was
inducted into Kappa Nu Sigma, the
scholastic honor society for juniors
and seniors. She is now vice president
