Campus Blood Drive
Scheduled
The posters are all over campus; “Give Blood, Save a Life.”
You can help someone in need, a surgery patient or an accident victim, by
donating a pint of blood at the American Red Cross blood drive on Wednesday,
Nov. 29.
The Red Cross solicits donors throughout the year, but the need for blood is
always more critical during the holiday season.
As part of a group project in their “Living Revolution” Capstone class, six
seniors are working with the Carolinas Region of the American Red Cross to
conduct this year’s blood drive at Meredith.
Red Cross officials told the group that they try to maintain a three-day supply
of all blood types, but they seldom have enough of the following: 0+, B+, 0-, A-
, and B-.
Students, faculty and staff can donate during the afternoon and early evening
of the 29th, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., in the Wainwright Suite on the lower level
of Beik Dining Hall.
“We are encouraging donors to make an appointment so things will flow
smoothly,” said Kelly Abernathy, biology major and group leader. “We will be
scheduling appointments in the Cate Center lobby on Nov. 15 and 20 and during
lunch and dinner in the dining haU on Nov. 15,16, 20, and 21.
Donors must be 17 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally
good health. The entire process takes about an hour, althougli the actual donation
takes only ten minutes. When donors register, their temperature, weiglit, blood
pressure and pulse will be checked, and after donation they will spend 20
minutes in the canteen having refreshnjents.
An additional part of the students’ project is to raise the awareness of the need
for organ donors, and donor cards will be available at the registration table on the
day of the drive.
Other members of the organizing group are Leslie Hall, Amy Lancaster,
Christy Owle, Molly Shepherd and Betsy Stewart. Faculty advisers are Dr. Garry
Walton and Dr. Rhonda Zingraff.
They are asking for your support. Please take time to donate blood on Nov.
29, and help save a life.
