November 29,1995 2 Campus Opinion Editorial: Keeping with tradition by Shannon Batts I have been at Meredith College since the fall of 1991(minus one se mester), and in that short time I have seen the breaking of old and the mak ing of new traditions here. Cornhuskin’ is one of our most famous traditions. The mention of the word “Cornhuskin” to present and ''former students of Meredith College can spark memories of fun-filled com petitions and harmless pranks. Corn huskin’ should be fun and should spark camaraderie among students; it should be a positive tradition for all students. Although I did not participate in the activities this year, 1 observed a few things that severely irritated me. Some pranks are not harmless, and sometimes fun is lost in competition. Early one morning during the week of Cornhuskin’ in the middle of the courtyard, 1 had the displeasure of seeing a soap-filled fountain and a message written on the bricks sur rounding the fountain attaching blame to a certain class. It is unnecessary to pollute water and give groundskeepers more work for the sake of competition; it is also unnecessary to mercilessly tease or criticize members of an opposing class. However, 1 was most disappointed and irritated by the lack of sportsman ship displayed at the end of the compe tition. Although Cornhuskin’ is a tradition, the winning of the competitions is not and should not be. “May the best class win” should be our mindset. No where is it written that seniors should win first place, juniors- second place, sopho- mores-third place and freshmen-fourth place. This fun tradition was not to many of those who expected to win first and did not- should anyone automatically ex pect to win in a competition? And to those who do win, it is never necessary to gloat. I’m sure many people were pleas antly surprised and shockingly disap Herald \ EditorinClikf layout Editore * Peay, Kim HSghJaad CopvEfJitor^ -f t * ** ***■*>***>**■> *■ + +f + 1+ +; Feattares Editor Arina Dixon News ♦> + ♦> + + + * +»***>*** 4+ +> + 4+ +4 + 4+ 4Betsy Stewstt Bu»nt»5 Manatgcr, - - iisrt Jones „ ♦ 4* * »«»* 4Beth Mortis, Batbara Watts, tataa Btowd, Sla Hatgert, AtfeooCarter.ShaRnon Paigeiayno, HoBingsworth, W«3t4y Kelly, Satafe Wiute, Deaooa Ciiffift, Dma DiMaio, Creta Wkf-z, Kimberly Zucker Phot«>gr.ti>hC)W , 4, .
