Student Life addresses concerns
The Student Life Committee has
been diligently addressing the issues
and concerns brought to our attention
by the students, faculty and staff. This
is our opportunity to let you know
how the issues have been addressed
throughout this past semester.
1. Senior Parking- The Senior park
ing is isolated from other parking areas
and is more easily monitored as is than
it would be if it were partially relo
cated to the large lot behind Heilman
and Barefoot. There is also the flexibil
ity of seniors living in either Barefoot
or Heilman dorms depending on the
size of the future senior classes. For
now the parking will remain a con
stant because of the possibility of se
niors living in Barefoot, in which case
the parking behind Poteat would the
most convenient selection.
2. Dining Hall- Thad O’Briant has
graciously accepted the suggestions
made by the Student Life Committee.
The skim milk is now 0% rather than
2%, the vegetables and pasta are cooked
in water, the deli meat is being changed
to the Healthy Choice brand, vegetar
ian dishes are offered at every meal
and more variations are available. The
dining hall openly accepts your sug
gestions, and also your favorite reci
pes that you would like to see served.
3. Change Machines- Change ma
chines are expected to be available in
the dorms by the fall of 1996.
4. Sidewalk around Meredith mile-
This is not a feasible option right now.
Other alterations are being researched
for the future of Meredith plan.
5. Tighter security around the
dorms due to the personal safety is
sues near the Meredith campus- Doors
were locked 24 hours for a trial period
of two weeks. This policy was not
widely accepted by resident students;
therefore, other options to secure the
students’ safety is being researched.
6. Recycling on campus- This is a
very real possibility if it is made into a
community project to be carried out
year after year. We welcome your sug
gestions as to how to get the campus as
a whole involved.
7. Phone Lines- There is no consis
tent pattern of overuse in the phone
lines. Data is currently being collected
to evaluate the most economical solu
tion to this on-going situation.
8. Mailboxes with the same box
number throughout the 4 years at
Meredith- It is more feasible to have
windowed boxes accessed by room
keys. Tokeepthesameboxnumberfor
four years would entail each student
having her own box since roommates
aren’t usually the same for four years.
This idea would be more costly than
the room key solution.
9. Computers- The computers in
the dorms are used more than origi
nally expected, so a tool to monitor
their use is in the works.
10. Public Displays of Affection-
Students are asked to be more consid
erate of each other when entertaining
guests in common living areas.
The Student Life Committee wishes
to thank each of you for your sugges
tions and support throughout this past
semester. We encourage everyone to
continue voicing their concerns
through Student Life Representatives
and through suggestion cards. There
are still numerous issues to be ad
dressed in the spring semester in addi
tion to the others we will receive. A
safe and happy holiday season to all.
MEA hosts a night of laughs

MEA hosted their annual Comedy
Night in Belk Dining Hall last Thurs
day. By 8 pm a good crowd had gath
ered with friends and boyfriends. Ev
eryone settled in with the soft drinks,
potato chips, nachos and cheese and
candy generously provided at each
table.
A little after 8 the “ Comedy Sportz ”
teams made their grand entrance. They
warmed up the audience with their
own improv songs and crowd pleasers
like “The Brady Bunch” theme song. A
DJ played lots of popular songs, as
well. The comedy members came out
offering peanuts, sedfood, hot dogs,
advice and blank stares for 25 cents.
Believe it or not, you just had to be
there.
“Comedy Sportz” is half comedy,
half sports. The comedians are divided
into two teams, in our case the
“Buriington Outlets” and the “Meredith
Graduates”. Judges were chosenfrom
the crowd and presented with fly swat
ters in each team’s color to use for
selecting a winner after each competi
tion.
The audience was encouraged to
yell out suggestions and give fouls to
teams whose acts dragged on too long,
were rude or just boring.
The teams had a captain who chose
the game they wanted to play from a
list on the program. The games were
oneofakind, like “Dubbing”, “Moving
Bodies”, “Day in The Life”, “Forward
Reverse” and “185”. They were just as
crazy as they sound. Everybody had a
great time and the 50 cents was defi
nitely worth it.
Junior Lauren Cox said “I’d love to
go to one of their shows with friends
now!”
