December 6,1995 10 Campus Health Cure for study blues By Paige Layno It’s time to lock ourselves up and pore over textbooks and class notes. Long hours in the library await us as we prepare for teachers’ torturous tests. Studying shouldn’t be so painful, audit doesn’t have to be. With a little creativ ity, along with some caffeine and will power, you can pass those exams with out enduring all kinds of stress along the way. If you’re like me, the sounds of silence don’t exactly soothe you. Buzz ing fluorescent library lights don’t set a great tone for my study routine ei ther. I prefer to have a little back ground noise; it’s nice to know some people are having fun even if I’m not. The Third Place Coffeehouse on Glenwood Ave. and Paradigm Coffee in Cary are great, relatively quiet places to curl up with your notes on mitosis and Krebs cycle. The Tudor Rose Tea Room in Cameron Village is virtually empty from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Monday through Friday. Grab your favorite Brit ish authors and have a nice pot of Earl Grey and a scone—-what better place to read the wit and wisdom of Jane Austen? It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you face five exams in as many days. A good way to handle the plethora of materials is to block offa study time for each class. Whether you prefer the peace and quiet of a library or the stimulating activity of a coffee shop, take only those books for which exam you are studying. When the bell gets ready to toll for that Western Civ exam, pull out your maps and notes from Dr. Novak and leave everything else be hind. Somehow it’s not as hopeless to face one class at a time rather than a towering stack of books. If you remember to nurture your self as you nurture your mind, exams will “pass” by you like a crowd of Christmas shoppers. Don’t cram, and don’t wait until the last minute. And as William Shakespeare said, ‘“Beguilethe time and feed your knowledge.” The Acorn (Meredith’s own literary and art maga zine) is taking submissions for this year’s edition. If you like to write poetry or short fiction, or if you have art or photography that you feel should be published, the Acorn needs you! Submissions can be placed in the box by the English and history office in foyner or in Cate Center. If you have any questions, call Deanna at 859-3819.
