December 6,1995 4 Campus Extras Personality Profile: Erica Balmer By Betsy Stewart High energy, high expectations and very high goals are phrases which aptly describe SGA Vice President and Senate Chair Erica Balmer. Balmer, a juniorhonors scholar majoring in biol ogy with a chemistry minor, applied to Meredith as an early decision candi date, and once she was ac cepted, she never looked back. As senate chair she has an ambitious agenda: to convince the board of trust ees that they should revise the Meredith male visitation policy. “Iwant to stress that my reasons for wanting this change are not personal,” Balmer said. “We in the senate want to do this for the majority of the students. ” The first step in the change process, a student referendum, was taken on Nov. 15. Balmer considers it to have been a success. Sixty-one per cent of the resident students and 38 percent of the total undergraduate population voted. “We usually don’t get this many people voting in cam pus-wide eleaions, ” she said. The next steps are to present the referendum results to the dean of students and vice presidents for administration, business and finance, and student de velopment, and then write a proposal to be submitted to the trustees. The proposal will ask that the dorms be open to male visitors for 12 hours on Saturdays and seven hours on Sun days. Balmer hopes to have it ready for the February board meeting. Erica Balmer: SGA vice-president. When she is not busy with SGA affairs, Balmer works as a biology lab assistant and student assistant to Dr. Robert Reid. She is junior adviser to Alpha Lambda Delta, the freshman honor society, and serves as fellow ship coordinator of the college group at First Baptist Church in Ra leigh. At First Baptist she also sings in Second Voice, a vocal ensemble that ministers through music. Balmer is one of three juniors re cently inducted into Silver Shield, Meredith’s hon orary leader ship society. Taking an active part in student affairs has become a way of life for Balmer. As a freshman she was SGA re porter and member of the Barber Science Club. In her sophomore year she served as SGA secretary, and before coming to Meredith she was junior and senior class president at Prince George High School in Prince George, Virginia. “Be ing involved in student government at Meredith is a challenge because alarge percentage of the community is very unique,” Balmer said, “and because of this we have to find out what the needs are and then figure out how to address them.” Balmer cited the Vari ety of opportunities and opinions at Meredith as offering a large resource pool to draw from, but admitted it’s difficult to find a balance. “The SGA is getting better at learning how to in corporate everyone,” she said.
