December 6,1995 8 Campus Extras Toy Story is a movie for young and old When I saw the preview for the movie “Toy Story, ” I was rather skepti cal. I am really not one for those cyberspace cartoon characters that look so real it’s eerie, and 1 don’t like animated stuff as much as I used to. But being the dedicated Herald staffer that I am, I went, or rather dragged myself, to the movie to watch and review it. 1 went to a matinee at Mission Val ley (paying $4.00 instead of $6.25 is always a perk) and found myself sur rounded by tons of loudmouth kids. It seemed that about 10 mothers had dropped their kids off at the movies, leaving me feeling like 1 was baby sit ting, but not getting paid. Neverthe less, 1 settled back to watch the movie. Boy, was 1 suprised. That movie took me on the wildest, fastest, funni est ride of my life, and 1 loved every minute of it. The movie opens with a little boy named Andy pretending that his toys (Little Bo Peep and a piggy bank) are terrorized by a bank robber Movie Review ByArinn Dixon (Mr. Potato Head). Death and destruc tion are imminent for the toys until our hero. Woody the Wranglin’ Cow boy, comes to save the day. When Andy is called away by his mother, he leaves the toys lying around and, as soon as the coast is clear, the toys come to life. When Andy is around, the toys are normal, unanimated ob- jeas, but when Andy is gone they have their own lives and personalities. The leader of the group is Woody, Andy’s favorite toy. Conflia arises when Andy gets a new toy for his birthday, a Buzz LightyearSpace Ranger, fully equipped with a laser, wings, and a voice that cries, “To the universe and beyond!” Soon Woody and Buzz are fighting for Andy’saffections, and the conflictleads to both of them getting stranded at a gas station far away from home. Then starts the most hilarious adventure 1 have ever seen. The two have to sur vive getting stuck in a vending ma chine, almost being run over by an eighteen wheeler, and trying to follow the moving van that carries Andy to a new home. So many things that happen utilize the toys from our childhood. For ex ample, when Buzz falls out of the win dow, the other toys try to help him up by making a rope out of the Barrel O’ Monkeys (remember those red plastic monkeys with the linked arms in the barrel?). Mr. Potato Head’s face keeps falling off and getting lost, just like when we used to play with him. Andy also has a Bucket of Soldiers, the little green soldiers that stand up on a little green platform, who carry out all kinds of military maneuvers using a jump rope and a baby monitor. The animation was superb. 1 said that 1 didn’t like that cyberspace stuff, but 1 have decided that 1 love com puter animation. The expressions on the faces of the characters were so real-looking, more so than regular ani mation. Of course, it helped that the voices ofthe characters were so enthu siastic and energetic. Tom Hanks was the voice ofWoody, and Tim Allen was in his element as the macho Buzz. Don Rickies, Cliff from “Cheers, ” and Annie Potts rounded out the all-star cast. 1 would definitely recommend go ing to see “Toy Story. ” It may seem like kiddie movie, but it sure kept me roll- ♦ ing with laughter. It has adventure, conflict, a handsome leading man, ro mance, and lots of fun—all of the in gredients needed for an awesome movie. 24- hour lock-up results In response to the safety concerns at Meredith, the Student Life Commit tee initiated a 24 hour door lock for a trial period of November 8 - November 20. The results were tallied as follows. • 97% of resident students felt safe on Meredith’s campus with 3% feeling unsafe • 91% of the students are happy with the original policy of doors locked between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. with 8% unhappy with this policy. • 18% of the surveyed students would be in favor of 24 hour door lock policy with 82% not in favor of this new policy • 29% of the students felt the “in convenience of the 24 hour door lock was worth protecting themselves and their personal possessions with 71% not feeling the same benefit • 20% of the students felt Meredith should have a similar policy to other local universities and colleges with 80% not believing in the same policy The results are from the 703 resi dent students who responded to the survey who make up 58% of the total resident students. Numerous com ments were made such as, “The 24 hour door lock would be needed if male visitation passes,” “Nothing bad enough has happened on Meredith’s campus to warrant the 24 hour door lock,” “The 24 hour door lock was a huge inconvenience,” and “I felt safer with the 24 hour door lock.” The Student Life Committee is evaluating these results and for now suggests that each room locks their doors and to report any suspicious guests on campus. Thank you for your cooperation and suggestions concern ing the 24 hour door lock. Meredith students and faculty helped to save lives by donating blood at the Red Cross Blood Drive last Wednesday. There were 80 pints of blood collerted which surpassed the goal of 70 pints set by the Red Cross. The Red Cross representative said they were 150 pints low after Thanksgiv ing weekend, and they were counting on Meredith to replenish their supply. The Meredith blood drive exceeded their expectations, said Stewart. The blood drive was done as a project for the capstone class Living Revolution. There were 93 donors and of those 19 were first time donors.
