February 7,1996 Campus Opinion Editorial: Walking safety on campus By Dina Di Maio Walkers on the Meredith campus are careful. They act responsibly. When they walk at night, they are usually never alone. That is safe. They wear proper clothing foraerobicactivityandfordriverstoseethem. That issmart. However, thereisone thing 1 notice they neglect doing, and it worries me about their welfere. Some walkers at Meredith walk in the street, not on the sides of the road as you would think. And often, they do not move out of the way when a car approaches. Not moving out of the way of an approaching car is very dangerous for the walker, a.s well as the driver. This situation is not safe for the driver because the driver may not see a car coming ftx)m the opposite lane while trying to pass the walkers. It puts the driver in a very unsafe position, endangering their life as well as an oncoming driver’s life because some walkers wouldn’t move to the side of the road. This situjUion is also unsafe for w^kers. If they are walking in tlie street, they have a higher chance of gating hit by a car. Chief Shanuck and the security department have posted memos around campus aboirt waking safety. A member of the security staff said that it is Very unsafe" to walk on the roadways and especially unsafe not to move out of a vehide’s way. 1 know walkers on Meredith's CMipus are intelligent and street smart. I know they wfll heed the rules that will keep them and others safe. MemdSh IhraM IwlJrtM fOttOlb Olfiy ..
