She was a member of the fresh man honor society, Alpha Lambda Delta; and shfe is now a member of Kappa Nu Sigma, Meredith’s scholas tic honor society, and the honorary leadership society. Silver Shield. She was recently named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. Off campus she serves as president of the college council at First Baptist Church and sings alto in Second Voice, First Baptist’s college group singing ensemble. Her plans after graduation include, a July 13 wedding to Jess Moore, a ’91 graduate of NC State. They will be married at First Baptist Church, where they first met. She hopes to go to graduate school in the fall and has applied to NC State's counselor edu cation program. She plans to earn a master’s degree with a concentration in student development and higher education. After grad school, TyvoU says, she and Moore “would really love to make Raleigh our home, but at the same time wc rellexible,andwe 'll go where we have to go for jobs," Tyvoli says the wedding plans are progressing. Her wedding gown is hanging next to the graduation gown in her closet, and her sisters Karen and Laura, along with Meredith friends June Holland, Erica Balmer, Amanda White and Rebecca'Huffstetler, have agreed to be her attendants. The honor code is not the only By Allison Carter Last Saturday the Winter Leader ship Conference took place here at Meredith College in Ledford Hall. The conference was entitled “Empowering Women: OnthcRoads WeTravel.’’The conference was originally scheduled for Saturday, February 3, but was post poned becau^ of bad weather. The conference was designed by a committee consisting of a representa tive from cach class. The members were Mika Murdoch, Regina Mack, Clarky Lucas, Allison Carter, and Heather Wilkin. The committee was overseen by Shelly Hoover and Cheryl JeiUcins who both work in the Office of Student Activities. Rhonda Mann from North Carolina State University was the keynote speaker. Her lecture was entitled "The Signs of Progress and the Turns for Change: A Road Map for Women.” Mann’sleaure consisted ofa “herstory" lesson with facts on eleven women that were well-known and not so well- known to many Americans. Mann advises young women who plan to be future leaders to “not let anyone ever tell you because you are a woman that you can’t do anything." tradition that is special to lyvoll. The mother-daughter tea and the father- daughter dance are two that she says she’ll always remember. “It was so wonderful sharing a piece of Meredith with them, to share my life at college with my parents was very special," she said, wiiat else makes Meredith unique? "1 love to walk through Joyner Hall and know I can pop into any faculty office and talk not just about my classes or thesis, but also about getting married. She will remember her favorite classes as Dr. Garry Walton’s Shakespeare's Comedies, Dr. Louise Taylor’s Ad vanced Composition and Dr. John Creagh’s Oral Interpretation of Litera ture. Tyvoll lives in a single room on the second floor of Heilman dorm. "I don’t Paul Potorti was one of the break out session speakers. His lecture was entidcd "Exploring the Roadblocks Among Women and Men,” He spoke about how women and men can com municate, they have different ways to express their feelings. Potorti says. "The most fundamen tal thing is basic communication. You must realize that the way you commu nicate with others should be tlic way you want others to communicate witli you." The second break out session speakerwas Sharon Cannon. Meredith Dean of Students. Her lecture was en* tided "Motivate to Escalate." DeanCan- non spoke mainly about setting goals in order to reach your highest poten tial. If an individual is motivated then she has the ability to motivate others. At the end of the day, the commit tee members led round tabic discus sions of topics that were mentioned throughout the conference or per tained to women s issues of today. Overall, the conference received posi tive comments from many of tliose who attended. have a roommate because nobody a>uld stand to live with me and the hours 1 keep. 1 like to go to bed at 9:00 or 10:00 p.m. and then get up at 3:00 a.m. to study. It’s too crazy for anyone else," she laughed. The hours may be crazy, l>ut her CJPA shows it works for her. If she had a million dollars to do nate to Meredith, Tyvoll would give it to the Division of Student Develop ment, "I truly believe that it is through extra-curricular aaivities that students learn things they couldn’tpossiblylearn inacollege classroom. And," sheadded, “if I didn’t give the money to student activities. I’d give it to the library.”
