By Robin Hollingsworth The most obvious change on Meredith's campus for the 1996 fall semester is the former Cate Center's renovations and additions. The stu dent activities center has now been expanded to better serve the needs of the Meredith College communit>’. This new fecility, entitled Cate and Park Center. wHJ offer convenience to students, feculty, and visitors by in cluding a variety of student-oriented services and campus life orgiinizations under one roof. As implied by its name, ttie new building is actually two centers inone. Cate Center, to the right of the main entrance, is undergoing renovations. The student bookstore, now under new management, continues to offer many old lavorites, in addition to new selections, such as CD’s, school sup plies and Meredith trinkets. Literally a step across the purple and white tiled floor, the new mail room is easily acce.ssible and offers much-needed elbow room, a terrific contrast to tiie former postal services area. The second floor of Cate Center is also in stages of reconstruction, but it will soon feature a spacious, multi purpose lounge area designed to give commuters and residents alike a place to study, meet friends or watch TV between classes. Another focal point on Cate’s second floor will be the snack bar. last year deemed Tradi tions, this year it will resume a previ ous name - The Beehive, The Beehive, when comjMeted, will includeaHealtiiy Choice Sub Bar and Chick-Fil-A. Park Center, to the left of the m;»in entnmce, will hold the offices of the Department of Continuing Education on the first floor. The second floor will consist of the Career Center, the Of fice of Student Activities and Leader ship Development, and student leader offices. Also on the second floor students can find the Dean Of Students offices. Within this office Residence Life. First Year Experience, and Commuter Life will be located. By Allison Carter Wlien 1996 Orientation Crew ar rived on campus on August 13, each organization and class representative were ready to welcome all of the in coming students, Cher>'l Jenkins, Director of Student Activities, and Shelly HM)vcr, Assistant Director of Student Activines, led the crewin the four diy preparation sched ule. Freshman Orientation started at 9:00 am on Saturday August 17 when the members of the class of 2000 drove through the gates. The students had no idea what they would encounter dur ing the next four or five days. The theme for this year’s orienta tion gave eacli student the charge to "Go Wliere No Woman had Ever Gone Before." Tlie new students were the newest of the "Meredithians" to travel the sidewalks and walkways of the Meredith campu-s. All of the parent and student ses sions, along with each piece of enter tainment, centered around the ideas of space exploration and what the future holds for Meredith. During the day on Saturdiy, the freshmen were given time to get their rooms in order atid then they were off to explore their futures in space tnivei- ing. Parents started to depart from their new college students by late afternoon. That niglit, the first ever moonlight showing of a major motion picture took place in the courtyard.
