McroUuh Hen October 2,1996 Campus Opinion Who is President Weems? From the Editor A friend and I were talking about graduation the other day and she asked, “You know wliai I’m going to say to President Weems wtien he hands me my diploma?” "Nope.” I said. “What?” “Nice to meet you,” she said. 1 thought that was really fuiiny at the time, but the more I tliought about it, it stopped being funny and started being sad. Who is President Weems? Would students know him if Uiey saw him? I haven’t ever seen him at a Spring Fling, a Family Day, a ring diner, in the academic buildings, walking around campus, or in the cafeteria. From whatl understand, Weems and many of the other administniiivestaff have their meals brouglit to Iheiu by the cafeteria workers. I understand that a person can be busy, but not ih^ busy. If he has too much to do to walk down to Belk for a sandwich, a cup of coffee and a conversation with a tabic of students, then he needs an aide or something to help him out. According to Erica Balmer, SC5A prefiident, Weems is basically a fund-raiser for the college and that takes up much of his time. Hello? Meredith has an endowment in excess of $43 million. With that under his bell, I think Weems can slow down a bit and take time to be interested in students personally. Even walking through tlie courtyard in the middle of the day would make him visible to the Meredith community. He is our leader, yet he is not accessible. Those who have concerns lake them to other administrative personnel. He represents us to tbetrustees, yet hedoesn’ttalktous. He is outof touch with the women on this campus and is making no effort that I can see to change tliat lean understaixt that happening at UNC-Chapel Hill, a school of 22,000, but not at Meredith College, a school of 2,400. End note: 1 noticed tliat Dr. Weems Iwsted a party for 2nd Heilman students involved in the fire. That’s a great idea, but tliere’s something casting adark cloud over it: does it take a tragedy to make President Weems interact with the student body? NO GIMMICKS EXTRA INCOME NOW! Stop the finger pointing, please Where is it written that only the bad news makes die headlines? liver since the fire in Heilman two weeks ago the entire campus seems to have erupted in nasiy name-calling. Most of this has been directed unfairly at seniors, labeled the “problem” class. This is entirely unfair, especially since Barefoot Donn is wliere the majority of 2nd Heilman students found new housing- The MC grapevine i.s also reeling with the rumors that theother classes and even certain professors have been equally uncooperative and insensitive. It's my opinion (and there will be plenty of you who will disagree) that tliis finger pointing has been blown way out of proportion. Sure, there were some girls who were treated toribly, but 1 think you would be hard pressed lo find many seniors who would give this type of treatment their seal of approval, li sounds likeevery misplaced student was given an ugly reception, but 1 believe these were only a few scattered episodes. It is never right to make generalizations about the majority based on the actions of a few, but here we all seem to be pro's at the blame game. Forachange let’s all work on ‘'accentuating the positive”. For once we need to send out a m.cssage we are tliaiikful, yes thankful Most importantly no one was killed or severely injured. And now takeaminute to stop, open up youreyes and look around at alithe good things that have happened. There were staff membo's, security, ahninistration and students who we’ve all seen working night and day to help ouL So many students gathered clothes, gave a shoulder to cry on and opened doors wide for Heilman students. Rather than letting thisdiive us all apart, let’stunilhe tables andletitpullusclosertogether instead. Don't forget to inform students By Elizabetli Pegram The note was posted outside ray R A’s door: MEA Mixer, Thursday night, 9 pm-12 am. In other words, guys on campus. That night, I, along with several other girls on my hall, was looking forward to the party. We got dressed up and SCI off to look for it. We were not exactly sure where tlie mixer was being lield, but we didn’t think that it would be too hard to find. We tirst checked the gym because we were told that was where it was usually held. After finding the gym locked, we began to wonder. We walked all over campus, dcteniiiiied to find the party. We realized tliat it hadn’t been publicized on campus, but it was in the Student Activites calendar and outside our RA’s door. After all, we would have heard if it had been canceled, right? Next, we noticed that we were the only ones who seemed to know about it. Things were getting “curiouser and curiouser.” We gave up at 10 pm after searching for 30 minutes. By that time, we had looked almost everywhere. I, however, refused to be all dressed up with nowhere to go. When soinarae sug gested Applebee's, I jumped at the chance. So that is how four members of third String ended upat Applebee’s untileleveno’clocklast Thurs day night, having more fun than we could at any mixer. 1 later found out that the mixer had been postponed. My question is why weren’t we told? Did MEA think that students wouldn’t notice?Theorganizationsoncampusneed to do a better job of keeping the students infonned of what is happening. Even though I had fun with my alternate plans, it would have been nice to know aliead of time thai there was no mixer. When the event is re.>;cheduled, please make sure to let us know.
